Week of December 10, 2018- Math

We will begin this week by looking into decimal multiplication. Students will have make up time on Tuesday to complete any missing work. We will complete the week with fun decimal multiplication activities, including a decimal cootie catcher.

Week of December 3, 2018- Math

This week, students will continue to study the methods for solving double digit multiplication. We will end the week by completing an error analysis involving double digit multiplication. Students will complete MAP testing on Thursday and Friday.

Week of November 26, 2018- Math

This week, the majority of the class will be learning three different methods for multiplying multi-digit numbers, Standard Method, Box Method, and Lattice Method. I will post the note page for each method as it is introduced. The 6th grade group of students will continue working on multi-digit division with the goal of clearing up the minor mistakes I am seeing. Students will also complete two Math Workshops this week with the focus on not giving up when math seems difficult.

Week of November 12, 2018- Math

No School on Monday!

Students will begin this week by taking an exit slip quiz to show where they are with their target skill (Multiplying 1x3 digits, multiplying 2x2 digits, or dividing with remainders). This weeks activities will be based on the results of the quiz. Stay tuned...

Students did well on the exit slips. With that in mind, I don't want to begin teaching them the next math skill on Wednesday and then go on a week holiday. So, on Wednesday, students will complete a fun exponents activity. On Thursday, we will be talking about grit and perseverance: What does that look like? What do we do when we are frustrated, etc. We are going to spend a class period discussing this because students have been struggling with grit when it comes to our math workshop days. Math comes easy for this class and when they run into problems that are a struggle, levels of frustration quickly spike. On Friday, we will complete a Math Workshop where we can practice some of the skills we talk about on Thursday.

This week, students will be working in one of two groups. The first group will be focusing on multiplying 3 digits by 1 digit. The second group will be focusing on long division. The 3 by 1 digit group will be completing a triangle interactive notebook piece while the division group will be working on Khan academy and a long division interactive notebook piece.

Two exit slips will be given this week to assess students understanding of these tasks as well as subtracting and adding to check their math.

Week of October 29, 2018

Students will be completing their Khan Academy assignments in class. I will also be working with small groups to work on math skills. We are really focusing on adding and subtracting numbers, especially decimal numbers. Students at the 6th grade level are working on multiplying and dividing decimal numbers.
