Buddy Program Announcement
5th/6th Grade Advocacy classes are partnering with 1st/2nd grade this year for an exciting buddy program! This is part of the 5th and 6th-grade service-learning program, where our older students will serve as mentors to our younger students. It’s going to be more than just book buddies — each week may look a little different. Some days, students might read together, other days they might create crafts like bracelets, or even play games.
The buddy program will take place weekly on Mondays for roughly 20 minutes during Quarter 3, beginning after Winter Break. Students are partnered based on their interests and personalities, with the hope of fostering meaningful and positive connections. Our older buddies have spent the first two quarters training and preparing to help inspire confidence, build friendships, and work on individualized goals together.
We’re looking forward to this program! If you have any questions or concerns, our Service-Learning Coordinator, Charlie Kahn, is happy to help at [email protected]
Advocacy Lessons: Little Spot of Feelings
Over the next several weeks, students will explore important social-emotional skills through Little Spot of Feeling read-alouds, class discussions, reflections, and activities. Each week will focus on a different theme, helping students better understand themselves, build empathy for others, and practice positive ways to interact in our classroom and community.
January 12-16: I’m NOT Just a Scribble & A Little Spot of Confidence
Students will learn about inclusion and confidence, focusing on accepting differences, believing in themselves, and understanding that everyone belongs.
January 19-23: A Little Spot of Happiness
Students will explore what happiness is, identify things that bring joy, and practice ways to manage emotions and create positive feelings.
January 26-30: A Little Spot of Love
Students will learn how love can be shown through actions and words, and how caring for others helps build strong relationships.

This year, our class will be using Typing Club via EdClub to learn how to type at school. Edclub is an educational learning platform that offers high-quality courses. Since the platform is web-based, students can use Typing Club in class, at home, or anywhere they have internet access.
To log in to your child's edclub account, go to the following login URL: https://mrsreeder.edclub.com
The username is your child's first name and last name initial. Please note that there are no capital letters in the username. For example: john d.
Password: 123456
Please bookmark the above URL and use it each time your child logs in. I am pleased to share Typing Club with you and am excited to see your child’s progress.

Reminders:
Our CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) administration has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 19, as the school did not receive testing materials in time for the original date. Students will take the test first thing in the morning, so please help your child arrive on time, well-rested, and ready to do their best.
All 2nd graders in Colorado take the CogAT as part of the statewide universal screening process. Colorado law (House Bill 14-1102) requires schools to screen all students no later than 2nd grade to help identify children who may qualify for gifted and talented services.
The CogAT does not measure what students have already learned in school. Instead, it looks at how students think, reason, and solve problems using words, numbers, and visual patterns. The results help teachers and staff better understand each child’s learning strengths and how they approach problem-solving.
This assessment does not affect report card grades. Instead, it is one tool—used along with classroom performance and teacher observations—to ensure all students have access to learning opportunities that meet their needs.
Students already identified as gifted and talented will not take the assessment.
Also, the colder weather means more items for your child to be in charge of. Please label your child’s clothing, especially outerwear, so that we can quickly return any lost items.
Reminders:
Students already identified as gifted and talented will not be taking the assessment.

This year, our class is excited to read with Scholastic Book Clubs! It’s a great way to build up your child’s book collection at home and help them improve their reading skills. And when you shop with Clubs, your orders earn points I can redeem for books and other classroom supplies we need.
Here’s how it works: I’ll send home flyers like these throughout the year. If you decide to place an order, you can do that through our class ordering page. Your books will arrive at school about 10 days after I submit our classroom order.
By teaming up with Scholastic, we’ll help your child become a more confident, independent reader—and we’ll build a classroom library all of my students are excited to explore!

We’re Learning with Little Spot of Feelings and Emotions!
We are so excited to introduce the Little Spot of Feelings and Emotions program in our classrooms! This curriculum uses colorful characters and engaging stories to help students learn about their feelings—like happy, sad, frustrated, and calm—and how to handle them in positive ways. Through fun activities and conversations, students discover how to recognize their emotions, express them kindly, and understand the feelings of others. These important skills help us create a caring, respectful classroom community where everyone feels safe and supported!
So far, we have learned about the scribble Spot, which is when you have more than one feeling at a time. For example, during back-to-school time you can feel excited and nervous. Last week, we read A Little Peaceful Spot and learned how to find and use a “peaceful spot” to help calm down when experiencing big feelings. Students practiced strategies such as taking deep breaths, imagining a calming place, and thinking kind thoughts. We discussed times during the day when using a peaceful spot can help them feel more in control and ready to learn.
Next, we will read A Little Spot of Anger and learn healthy ways to manage feelings of anger. Students will explore how anger feels in their body and practice strategies to calm down before acting—such as taking deep breaths, counting to ten, and walking away to cool off. We’ll talk about how expressing anger in safe, respectful ways can help solve problems and keep relationships strong.

Reminders
ZERO WASTE WEDNESDAYS!
How It Works:
|
Week 1 R |
What does RESPECT mean? Being kind to people, property, and yourself. Being considerate of our community. |
|
Week 2 I |
What does INTEGRITY mean? Telling the truth and doing the right thing even when nobody is looking. |
|
Week 3 S |
What does it mean to be SAFE at school? Act in ways that won’t harm yourself or others. |
|
Week 4 E |
What is EMPATHY? Understanding and caring about the feelings of others. |
We will be teaching students what these 4 words mean—focusing on a different part of RISE each week—and what it looks like to live these values out during school and at home. We will use RISE all year to celebrate positive behaviors.
Hello!
My name is Mrs. Reeder, and I am your child's teacher/Advocate. Advocacy classes are, first and foremost, a time for students to build supportive relationships with their peers and with an adult they can trust, as well as learn about social and emotional health. It is a time for everyone to feel recognized and welcomed in the classroom and school community. As your child’s advocate, I will be your primary point of contact, so please feel free to reach out to me at any time. I am committed to advocating for your child this year.
I have subscribed you to my Advocacy and Academic pages through Edlio. Edlio is our means of posting information to our class pages on the Westgate website. You will receive updates to your email automatically whenever I post to Edlio. You may also receive an email from me with the same information.
This quarter, your child will have Art with Ms. H and I-Lab with Mr. Elliott. You are not pre-subscribed to their Edlio pages, so please go to Ms. H’s and Mr. Elliott’s Edlio Pages on the Westgate Specials pages and subscribe.
This month, our August Advocacy theme is RISE!
At Westgate, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a part of our Whole Child Education program. PBIS is a system in which students, staff, and the community create a set of school-wide behavioral expectations/core values. We teach those expectations in all our various environments, and then we CELEBRATE when we see students doing those things! At Westgate, we RISE (Respect, Integrity, Safety, Empathy).
