Social Studies Tuesday

  1. Pretend that you are a colonist living in the Roanoke Colony. You have been living there for many months and your leader (John White) has just left on a boat to get your colony more supplies.
  2. You are going to write a journal entry everyday of what is going on in your colony, with the last entry being the day that your colony no longer lives there. Each day you will add a new entry with a different set of things happening. Make sure to use language you think that colonists would use, say what is happening in your world, and be creative. Really put yourself in a colonists shoes!
  3. Tuesday Prompt: The day is November 5, 1588. You are low on supplies, your parents only have a chicken, some corn, and a few gold coins left. You heard that your leader just left to go back to England to get supplies. You are 11 years old, and your job is to take care of the chicken. Write a diary entry of what you’re feeling today, what you’re doing, and what is it like for you today in the Roanoke colony.

      4. What types of dwellings will you build? Out of what material? Who will build them?
      5. How will you interact with the Native Americans? What if they don’t want you there? How will you make sure they are peaceful with you and your people?
