Week of June 1st

Monday – No School 

Tuesday – Slice of Life Presentations & The Little Prince 

Students who would like to read their Slice of Life to the class will have the opportunity, although this is not required.  We will also begin the first half of The Little Prince movie.  While we watch the movie, students will identify similarities & differences between the book & the movie.

Slice of Life Personal Narrative, Week 2 

Monday – Paragraph 4 

Complete Monday 33 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will write their 4th paragraph of their Slice of Life.  This will be the part of the story that is building up to the climax of the story. 

Tuesday - Conclusion 

Complete Tuesday 33 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will write their 5th paragraph of their Slice of Life.  This will be the climax of the story.  At this point, their entire rough draft should be completed  

Wednesday – Revising for Word Choice & Sensory Details 

Complete Wednesday 33 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will understand sensory details and how to add them into their writing.  These are written details that involve the 5 senses.  Students will revise their writing by adding 1 sensory detail in each of their 5 paragraphs.  Students will also revise for word choice by using a thesaurus. 

Thursday – Editing & Publishing 

Complete Thursday 33 of the Daily Language Review packet.   Students will review CUPS and how to properly edit their completed writing.  They will also publish their writing by putting it in proper format within a word document.  If time allows, students who would like to share their writing to the class will have the opportunity to read their Slice of Life aloud. 

Friday - Finish and Review Introduction 

Teacher Work Day – No Assignments – If students are not done with their Slice of Life Final Draft, they should work on that over the long weekend.   

Week of May 17th

Slice of Life Personal Narrative, Week 1 

Monday – Introduction and Brainstorm  

Complete Monday 32 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will be introduced to a “Slice of Life” personal narrative.  The idea of Slice of Life is that they take a small, important moment in their life and write about it.  Instead of writing about a birthday party, for example, they would choose one small moment from that party, such as blowing out the candles of the cake.  They will use sensory details to stretch a 3 – 5 minute moment of time into a full essay.  Today, we will learn about Slice of Life, see a few examples, and begin brainstorming.   

Tuesday - Justification 

Complete Tuesday 32 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will choose a Slice of Life topic from their brainstorm from yesterday and write a justification for it.  They will explain why it makes for a good Slice of Life.  This will be modeled in class and students will write their justification in a RACES style response. 

Wednesday – Planning 

Complete Wednesday 32 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will begin planning their Slice of Life based on the sequence of events in the story.  The full narrative will be 5 paragraphs in total.  Since this is a personal narrative, students will have a bit more freedom with how it is organized when compared to some of our non-fiction writing from earlier in the year.  Students will be shown a model of how to plan their writing out. 

Thursday – Writing an Introduction 

Complete Thursday 32 of the Daily Language Review packet.   Students will review setting and be shown how to write an introduction that hooks the reader.  We will talk about establishing a setting with details that place the reader “right in the story”.  Students should complete their introduction.  

Friday - Finish and Review Introduction 

Complete Friday 32 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students should finish their introduction from yesterday and make any improvements to their introduction. 

Week of May 10th

Novel Groups, Week 6 

Monday – Plot Events & Flow Map  

Complete Monday 31 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will continue their  story board on their novel.  Students will need to be able to justify whether or not a plot event is considered important enough to include given an 8 event limit.  Once their plot event story board is completed, students will rank the plot events based on importance to the overall story.  Students will read each other’s justifications in the shared group document.   

Tuesday – Theme 

Complete Tuesday 31 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will learn what plot is within a story.  Students will revisit theme and determine the theme of their novel.  They will need to justify the theme with text evidence.  Students will write a detailed paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining the theme of their story.  

Wednesday – Writing Reviews 

Complete Wednesday 31 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will learn how to determine pros and cons of a book and write a review.  Students will complete a pro/con chart based on their novel in order to begin writing a review on Thursday.   

Thursday – Writing Reviews Continued  

Complete Thursday 3of the Daily Language Review packet.   Students will be shown how to write a review of their novel and justify their opinion.  Students will do a quick plan before writing and begin their review in a Word Document.  Students are not expected to complete this in one day.   

Friday 

Complete Friday 31 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will be given a fictional page to read on their own.  As they read, they will identify the theme of the story as well as list a few opinion-based pros and cons of the story.   

Week of May 3rd

Novel Groups, Week 5 

Students will finish reading a novel and analyzing their book novel.  We will be working on some post-reading skills this week.   

Monday – Summarizing 

Complete Monday 30 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to properly summarize a piece of text.  After students read their novels, they will write a summary of what they read in their shared group document as well as read each other’s summaries.     

Tuesday – Plot Events  

Complete Tuesday 30 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will learn what plot is within a story.  Students will choose 5 – 8 major plot events from their story to create a story board on their novel.  Students will need to be able to justify whether or not a plot event is considered important enough to include given an 8 event limit. 

Wednesday – MAP Testing 

We are planning on MAP testing on Wednesday, May 5th.  Since we will be taking the reading MAP test, we will not have literacy instruction on this day.  This date is tentative.  If we do not end up MAP testing on this day, we will be completing an alternative assignment based on our novels.

Week of April 27th

Novel Groups, Week 4 

Students will continue reading a novel and working on certain comprehension skills. As we read these novels, students will continue to identify elements of a story, as well as working on a variety of reading strategies.  Students will do this in their individual novels.  

Tuesday – Synthesizing  

Complete Monday & Tuesday 29 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will learn how to synthesize as they read.  This skill will be modeled, and students will synthesize in their own novel as they read.   

Wednesday – Questioning 

Complete Wednesday 29 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will review how to write proper questions as students read while using the Depth of Knowledge scale that we learned at the beginning of the year.  In addition to writing and identifying questions, students will add their questions into their shared group document to ‘quiz’ their classmates and discuss the chapters read.   

Thursday – Summarizing 

Complete Thursday 29 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to properly summarize a piece of text.  After students read their chapters, they will write a summary of what they read in their shared group document as well as read each other’s summaries.     

Friday – Review

Students will be given a fictional page to read on their own.  As they read, they must demonstrate each skill learned this week.  They must make 1 synthesis, make and identify 2, and write a summary of the text.  Students will be given a hard copy of the text in class, but it can also be found in the “Novel Group” tab in Teams.    

Week of April 19th

Novel Groups, Week 3  

Last week, students started reading a novel and working on certain comprehension skills. As we read these novels, students will continue to identify elements of a story, as well as working on a variety of reading strategies.  Students will do this in their individual novels.  

Monday – Responding to Others Continued  

Complete Monday 28 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will learn how to write a small paragraph about their opinion of the book so far, what they think will happen in future chapters, as well as describe characters.  This will be done in a forum setting where students will be able to respond to others who are reading the same book as them.  This will be done on Teams and students will be shown how to do this. 

Tuesday – Figurative Language: Similes & Metaphors 

Complete Tuesday 28 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to read, write, and recognize similes and metaphors in a text.  Students will look for examples of simile and metaphor in their own novel as they read and interpret what the figurative language literally means.   

Wednesday – Figurative Language: Hyperbole & Personification  

Complete Wednesday 28 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to read, write, and recognize hyperbole and personification in a text.  Students will look for examples of hyperbole and personification in their own novel as they read and interpret what the figurative language literally means.   

Thursday – Synthesizing

Week of April 12th

For this week, we will have 2 Zoom sessions due to changes in the schedule for CMAS.  We will meet at our normal from 8:30 – 9:15, as well as 1:45 – 2:30. 

Novel Groups, Week 2

Monday – Making Inferences 

Complete Monday 27 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn about inferences and how to use context clues and prior knowledge to figure out what is happening with a character.  As students read their own novels, they will make inferences and provide text evidence. 

Tuesday – Vocabulary 

Complete Tuesday 27 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to find difficult words in the text and use context clues to determine what they could mean.  As students read in their novels, they will identify their own vocabulary words, write down what they think they mean, as well as the dictionary definition. 

Wednesday – Visualizing 

Complete Wednesday 27 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to visualize as we read a text, as well as why it’s an important reading skill.  As students read, they will pause during parts that are particularly detailed to determine words that help describe the scene.

Week of April 5th

Novel Groups, Week 1 

Last week, students chose a novel to read.  As we read these novels, students will identify elements of a story, as well as working on a variety of reading strategies.  Students will do this in their individual novels. 

Monday – Setting  

Complete Monday 26 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn about setting and how to identify setting in a story.  We will focus on microsetting vs. macrosetting.  As students read their own novels, they will identify each setting and describe the setting in their own words.   

Tuesday – Character Traits 

Complete Tuesday 2of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn about character traits and the difference between physical traits vs. emotional traits.  As students read their own novels, they will identify traits of the characters and provide text evidence for why or how they know each character’s trait.   

Wednesday – Making Predictions 

Complete Wednesday 26 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to make appropriate predictions when reading a text.  Students will understand how to write a proper prediction that is justified with evidence from the text.  As students read their own novels, they will make predictions.   

Thursday  Making Connections 

Complete Thursday 26 of the Daily Language Review packet. We will learn how to make connections as we read.  We will understand the 3 different types of connections: text to self, text to text, and text to world.  As students read their own novels, they will make their own connections.   

Friday – Review  

Complete Friday 26 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will be given a fictional page to read on their own.  As they read, they must demonstrate each skill learned this week.  They must identify 1 setting, 1 trait of a character, make 1 prediction, and make 1 connection.  Students will be given a hard copy of the text in class, but it can also be found in the “Novel Group” tab in Teams.

Wednesday – Poetry Review, Share, & Write 

Complete Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday 25 of the Daily Language Review packet.  We still have a few persuasive presentations to complete.  After those are done, we will review each of the types of poems that students wrote last week.  Students will share out their poems with the class if they would like to.  Students will write one more poem of their choice, but it must have a theme of persuasion.  It can be related to their persuasive writing, but it does not have to be.  They can write this poem in Teams or on Word Online.

Poetry 

Monday – Introduction to Poetry 

Complete Monday 24 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students should watch the recorded lesson that corresponds to Monday.  We will be learning about elements of poetry and identifying these elements together.  Afterwards, the assignment is to complete the Elements of Poetry practice page on your own.  This can be found in the Poetry tab in Teams.  Click on Class Notebook.  Click on the icon that looks like 3 books [||/].  Click on your name.  Click on Poetry.  The document is titled “Elements of Poetry”. 

Tuesday – Haiku 

Complete Tuesday 24 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students should watch the recorded lesson that corresponds to Tuesday.  We will be learning about Haiku and tying in some elements of poetry into the Haiku from the day before.  Afterwards, the assignment is to write 2 Haikus.  One must be related to nature, and the other can be a topic of your choice.  This can be found in the Poetry tab in Teams.  Click on Class Notebook.  Click on the icon that looks like 3 books [||/].  Click on your name.  Click on Poetry.  The document is titled “Haiku”.

Persuasive Writing

Persuasive Writing 

Monday – Making PowerPoint Presentations – Students should join the zoom at 8:30

Students will begin a PowerPoint presentation on their persuasive topic.  They will be shown how to create a PowerPoint and we will focus on ONLY adding relevant information in the correct order.  Students will be shown how to do this during live instruction. 

Tuesday – Making PowerPoint Presentations Continued – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Tuesday 22 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will continue to add relevant information into their PowerPoint.  We will also add a Bibliography page to the end of the PowerPoint.  Students will be shown how to format, create new slides, and make things properly sized.  Students will be shown how to do this during live instruction 

Wednesday – Making PowerPoint Presentations Continued – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Wednesday 22 of the Daily Language Review packet. By Wednesday, students should have the relevant information placed into their PowerPoint presentation.  They will be shown how to add effects and pictures to their PowerPoint to make them more appealing (transitions, animations, pictures, etc...).  These skills will be modeled during live instruction.   

Thursday – Finalizing PowerPoint Presentations & Practicing Presentations – Students should join the zoom at 8:30

Students will make any finishing touches on their PowerPoint presentations to ensure that they are ready to be presented the following week.  Students will submit their final product by sharing it with me.  Once they have checked in with the teacher, they can begin practicing and reciting for their oral presentation.   

Friday – Finalizing PowerPoint Presentations & Practicing Presentations 

Complete Friday 22 of the Daily Language Review packet.  Any student who still needs to finalize a PowerPoint should do so on Friday by accessing their Office account.  All students should work and prepare at home to practice their oral presentation.  We will begin oral presentations next week.

Persuasive Writing 

Monday – President's Day – No School 

Tuesday – Teacher Work Day – No School 

Wednesday – Pictures & Slogans – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Monday & Tuesday 21 of the Daily Language Review packet.  Students will understand how to create a slogan with a matching picture for their persuasive essay.  We will review commonalities between well-known slogans.  Students will come up with their own, then design a picture to go with it.  This will be modeled in class.  All pictures will be drawn on printer paper.  

Thursday – Pictures & Slogans Continued – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Wednesday & Thursday 21 of the Daily Language Review packet.  We will review slogans briefly and students will finalize their picture and slogan.  If students finish early, they will begin gathering any links they used during their research, including the picture from their caption to begin organizing.  We will work on citing sources and creating a bibliography next week, so having these links saved in one spot will be important. 

Friday – Finishing Touches 

Complete Friday 21 of the Daily Language Review packet.  This will be an extra work day for students to finish their picture & slogan, or compile the links for their bibliography for next week.   

Week of February 8th

Persuasive Writing 

Monday – Editing – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Monday 20 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will review the editing process for their persuasive essay.  We will begin editing by reviewing the CUPS (capitalization, usage, punctuation, spelling) acronym. We will practice editing with a sample paragraph.  Students will edit their piece to prepare for publishing. 

Tuesday – Revising for Sentence Structure – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Tuesday 20 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will understand what it means to publish and how to publish their final draft of their writing.  We will review strategies for how to format each document. Students will create a Word document and copy & paste their final draft into Word.  They will share this document with me.    

Wednesday – Pictures & Captions – Students should join the zoom at 8:30 

Complete Wednesday 20 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will understand the function of a picture and caption within a piece of non-fiction writing.  We will look at examples of pictures with proper captions written underneath them.  Students will begin looking for a picture to write a caption for that is related to their persuasive writing & opinion.  This will all be modeled in class and the final product will be placed into OneNote.

Complete Thursday 20 of the Daily Language Review packet. Students will continue to understand the function of a picture and caption within a piece of non-fiction writing.  They will finalize their picture and caption and make sure it has all the necessary information and any grammar/spelling mistakes are no longer there. 

Friday – Caption Word Substitution 

Complete Friday 20 of the Daily Language Review packet.  Students will do a small revision for word choice on their caption.  They should change at least 3 words from their caption to improve them.  They should use either www.kidthesaurus.com or www.thesaurus.com to make these changes if they need assistance thinking of higher level vocabulary words.
