Important Information – Night of the Notables 

The Night of the Notables presentations are on Tuesday, June 1st and Wednesday, June 2nd!Your child may choose to come in on their assigned day dressed as their person, but this is optional.  We will be recording the presentations through Zoom and those will be posted afterwards if you would like to see your child’s presentation.  Please email me if you have other questions about this project.

Week 33– Night of the Notables, Week 4 

Important Information – Night of the Notables

Students will understand how to structure their conclusion for their Night of the Notables biography.  This will be modeled during class.  Students will be expected to follow the same structure modeled.  They will write this in OneNote.  Click on “Night of the Notables”. Click on “Biography Rough Draft”.  Students will only be writing their conclusion today.  The entire rough draft should be completed by today. 

Tuesday  

Students will edit & revise their rough drafts and publish their final in a word document.  We will review ARMS & CUPS (revision and editing acronyms) and make changes for our final draft.  Students will share the document with their teacher. 

Wednesday  

Students will begin working on their PowerPoint presentation.  They will transfer information from their biography into the PowerPoint to present next week.  They will only work on adding information today. 

Thursday 

Students will finish their PowerPoint presentation and include pictures, transitions, & animations.  Since we will be presenting next week, any unfinished work on the presentation must be done at home by logging in to their Westgate Microsoft account.  Students are also welcome to practice their presentation over the long weekend.   

Friday 

Teacher Work Day – No Assignments – Students should work on finalizing their PowerPoint if necessary and preparing for the oral presentation.

Friday 

The assignment is to go over all paragraphs that have currently been written (introduction, body paragraph 1, 2, & 3).  Students should finish any unwritten paragraphs or add any missing pieces to an existing paragraph.  We will work on the conclusion next week. 

Social Studies Class May 10th-14th

Week 27  Night of the Notables, Week 1 

Monday  

Students will understand the Night of the Notables project and its purpose and expectations.  We will look at the timeline for when things will be due.  Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and begin brainstorming people to research.  Students will be shown 4 different resources from which to choose.  Their person should be someone who is from Colorado, or did their notable work in Colorado.  If your child is interested in someone who they found outside of the different resources, please let me know! 

Tuesday  

Students will create a list with approximately 3 – 5 notable people that they are interested in researching in more depth.  This will be their tentative list.  At the end of class, students will write a justification about which person they are choosing for this project and why.   

Wednesday  

Students will begin researching their notable person by reading about them.  We will review how to write ‘fact fragments’ as we read a nonfiction text.  Students will write down fact fragments as they read about their notable person.   

Thursday 

Students will continue their research and note-taking.  Students will continue to write down their fact fragments.  

 

Friday 

Students will finish reading about their notable person and all of their fact fragments should be written down.  Next week, we will begin writing our biographies, so it is very important that students are ‘experts’ on their person at this point.  All of their articles should be read and all fact fragments should be written down in a safe place and brought to school on Monday.

Week 27  Famous Modern Coloradans   

Objective – Students will learn & understand the accomplishments and service of many Coloradans.  

Monday  

Students should review & write down the vocabulary words & definitions for the week.  Afterwards, students will create a Frayer Model for each vocabulary word. Wednesday  

We will continue to discuss what it means to be notable for something and what someone might have to accomplish in their lives to be recognized as such. We will discuss what it means to be a ‘native’ of an area.  We will read the following articles together:

Thursday 

We will begin discussing our Night of the Notables project for the rest of the quarter.  In this project, students choose a notable Coloradan to research and write a biography on.  The person must have been born in Colorado or did their notable work in Colorado.  We will discuss potential people to research and students will also be able to begin scanning Studies Weekly for people to research further.  Students do not have to commit to any person just yet.  Thursday will be a day for brainstorming!

Objective – Students will learn & understand the roles and functions of the national forests and parks in our state.  We will investigate some specific areas found throughout Colorado.

Week 23: Arts & Recreation Continued 

Objective – Students will understand the arts and recreational activities that are available in Colorado that make our state what it is. We will connect these things to the economy of Colorado.   

Monday – Choose a Topic & Begin Researching 

Students will be choosing a topic about the arts, recreational activities, or sports teams that are in Colorado to do additional research.  There will be a list to choose from.  Students will choose one of the topics and begin reading an article about the topic.  We will supply students with a kid-friendly article related to their topic.  Their assignment for Monday is to read the article and write down fact fragments after choosing their topic.   

Tuesday - Create a PowerPoint Presentation 

Students will begin creating a PowerPoint presentation on their topic.  The purpose of their presentation is to inform, much like our prior expository writing that we did in Quarter 2.  Students will only focus on adding information to each slide today. 

Wednesday - Finalize a PowerPoint Presentation 

Students will finish a PowerPoint presentation on their topic.  Once all of their information is in the presentation, they can begin adding supporting features, such as pictures, animations, and transitions. If they do not finish, they are welcome to finish during Spring Break!

Objective Students will understand the branches of government, the function of the constitution, and the ways in which the people of Colorado and the USA are governed.  

Monday – President's Day – No School

Wednesday – Students should join zoom at 12:45pm 

We will begin drafting a letter to a Colorado government official (Senator or Representative).  Students brainstormed ideas for this last week.  Students will be shown a model and the minimum aspects of the letter that must be required.  We will apply some of the persuasive techniques that we learned in literacy to do this.  

 

Thursday – Students should join zoom at 12:45pm

Students should complete their rough draft and submit a final draft of their letter.  They will complete this on Word Online.  They should read through their rough draft for a final time, while checking for any grammar and spelling mistakes.  They will be reminded how to create and share a Word Document on Thursday.
