4th Grade Science- Week of 2/19/2020

We are diving into the final unit of this quarter: Natural Resources. Students will play a game that illustrates the "Tragedy of the Commons" in a hands-on way with Ms. Valenza. Students will continue discussing natural resource issues and will begin a vocabulary dictionary for academic natural resources vocabulary.

4th Grade Science- February 10, 2020

This week, students will be finishing the Earth's Spheres Unit. We will discuss chemical and physical/mechanical weathering. Students will take a quiz on Wednesday to show their knowledge growth in this unit. At the end of the week, students will be introduced to our next unit in science: Energy and Natural Resources.

4th Grade Science: Week of February 3, 2020

This week, students will solve the Mystery, “How could you save a town from a hurricane?” They will collaborate in groups to figure out how to prevent their town from flooding, while also staying within the town’s budget.

You can encourage your child’s curiosity this week at home! Watch this quick 1-minute video together about how hurricanes get their names: http://safeYouTube.net/w/ouTb. It’s also a great time discuss any hurricanes that may have happened recently.

4th Grade Science: Week of January 27, 2020

This week, we also continued our unit about the importance of Earth’s fresh water. Our lesson was called, “When you turn on the faucet, where does the water come from?” We learned how in many places water can seep into porous ground and remain there. These places are called aquifers, and these are where many people get their drinking water from.

You can encourage your child’s curiosity at home! Watch and discuss this video where people are pulling up water from deep underground: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StWCNiLuMxI Spark a conversation by asking your child, “What is this structure called?” (It’s a well.) “Why do you think there is water in the ground—where do you think it came from?” If you know any family members or friends who get their water from a well, this would be a great opportunity to mention it to your child, helping them to make a more personal connection to the ideas.

4th Grade Science- Week of January 20, 2020

This week, students will finish graphing the area amounts of Earth's salt water, frozen fresh water, and fresh water. Then, students will begin setting up for a fun activity where they must find water in a city.

In honor of the field trip to the National Western Stock Show, Wednesday will also include a focus on animals where students will create "Truth" or "Hogwash" cards.

4th Grade Science- Week of January 13, 2020

Students will begin the week by working in teams to create models of a classroom rule. This activity is increased in difficulty due to limited materials and time constraints.  Students will share their models on Wednesday.

Following this activity, students will begin the new science unit, "Earth's Systems" where we will focus this week on "How much water is in the world?" Assignment for this week will be completing the activity "Map the World's Water" from MysteryScience.com .

4th Grade Science- Week of 12/2/19 - 12/6/19

This week, students will continue to explore the rock formations of Earth. They will learn what superposition is with a food experiment (I will have non-peanut options, if your child has another intolerance, please email me for the guidelines to provide them a different treat). Students will have two assignments due by the end of the week.

Please check your child's grades on Infinite Campus! All past assignments are due by Wednesday, 12/11/19. If you have any questions regarding past assignments, please email me. Some assignments have been posted on this forum; however, if you do not see the one you need, please email me prior to 12/10/19.
