Weekly Update - September 23

This week, students will complete their look at Supreme Court cases that deal with student's First Amendment rights in school. On Wednesday, students will hold a Socratic Seminar where they will ask and answer questions surrounding the the rights of student's at school and why these rights are not the same as those they have outside of school. 

Weekly Update - September 16

This week, students will complete their Bill of Rights Summary Sheet: Students choose one of the first ten amendments and completes four section which include summary, details, unanswered questions and ethical considerations. Students will also read, answer questions and debate various amendments in a Socratic Seminar context. We will asking the question: Our people's First Amendment rights the same inside a school as they are outside a school.

Weekly Update - September 9

This week, students will finish and present their posters on the major debates and compromises of the Constitutional Convention. 
Following this, students will look at the Anatomy of the Constitution. This includes Articles 1-5 and the Bill of Rights.

Weekly Update - September 3

This week students will learn about the main debates that took place during this Constitutional Convention. 
  • What to do about slavery and the slave trade
  • How to determine taxation and representation
  • How should the president be elected
Students will also learn be introduced to the Preamble of the Constitution and Articles 1, 2 and 3 of the Constitution.

Weekly Update - August 26

This week in social studies, students will take the experiences they had creating their own government and see how, when faced with the same questions, the founders of the United States created their first government. Some questions that we will ask about the Articles of Confederation are:
  • What kind of government did our founders want?
  • What were the strengths of this new government?
  • What were the weaknesses of this new government?
  • How did the Articles of Confederation compare with the governments created by the student groups.

Weekly Update - August 20

Welcome to Social Studies! 
  • Students are finishing their Create Your Own Constitution Project by Wednesday and will be presenting on Thursday
  • This is a way for students to work together, compromise, problem-solve and create empathy for what the Founding Fathers went through when they had to create the framework for our new nation.
 
This year our theme is American History from the Constitution to the Civil War and Reconstruction period.
 
Quarter 1 focus:
  • Using a pre-assessment to understand what students know about the Constitution
  • Why and how the Constitution was written 
  • The Bill of Rights
  • Learning and using the RACES strategy to develop detailed paragraphs that answer questions using evidence from the text.

Students were each given a planner to use this year to aid in time management and organization.  Each day, they should be copying down the agenda for each class.  This is a great tool to see what's happening daily.  Please encourage your student to maintain this by checking in with them regularly.  Students are also encouraged to track upcoming due dates in their planners.
