Weekly Update - August 27

As I graded the final tests for the Real Number System, I am happy to report that the class did a good job and I saw some real good growth! Those students who complete their warm-ups, do the daily practice, ask questions and studied did the best. Math takes work every day and if class is missed for any reason, then students should make sure they are asking for the work missed and finding time to complete it. I will take time to hand back and go over the Real Number System tests.

This week, we will begin our unit on Exponents, Square and Cube Roots and Scientific Notation. We will begin the unit with a pre-assessment. Students will then be given different sources for understanding exponents and rules around operations with exponents. They will use the information they find to complete an interactive notebook assignment.

Math Test Tomorrow

For most students, they will be taking a math test tomorrow. Please have them study tonight. In the Math Test Assignment, I have attached all the work we have been doing in class. Students should also have their graded pre-assessment to look over.

Math Update

Hi,
As we have worked through the assignments this week, I have not given practice problems to do at home yesterday or today due many factors including the eclipse, other class work and student voices.

Tomorrow, I am going to hand back the student's pre-assessment and practice problems students can use to study for the test on Thursday. Based on how class goes tomorrow, we may move the test to Friday, but students should be prepared to take the test on Wednesday.

Thanks,
Mr. Rowan

No Practice Problems Today

There will be no practice problems tonight as we had a short class so we could view the eclipse.  Student got their Number System worksheet back and they can correct the problems they missed tonight. The video for this worksheet is on the Class Website.

Weekly Update - August 20

As we move into our second week of math, we are getting into a groove with our Do Nows, Video Lessons, Practice Problems in class and now the few practice problems we will be sending home each night. As things start to get hectic, it is crucial that students, parents and teachers have good communication. Each day in class, it is expected that students write down the daily agenda into their planners. These planners, along with a blue communication/school work at home folder should be coming home each night. In the folder you will find work that has been graded and returned in addition to any work that needs to be finished at home. This is where students will have the 2-4 practice problems they should be doing at home.

This week, I will be handing back the Number System problems. Students who got below a 3 will have the opportunity to re-work and correct the problems they missed. We will also be finishing up our Integer Foldable. Students will use the Foldable to work Integer Practice Problems in class. It is my hope that I can work closely with students who need the extra help while letting those working at a faster pace move forward.

We will have a test on the Number System Thursday.

Math Update

It has been a good first week of math class as we took our pre-assessment on the Real Number System and are starting to work on daily Do-Nows and Assignments. As we move forward, I will be sending home anywhere between 1-5 practice problems each night to bridge the learning we do in class day-to-day. You will find these problems in their blue communication folder in the "Back to School" side. It is our hope that this will not require too much time and will be what's best for our math students.
Thank you for your support and please email me with any questions or concerns.

Weekly Update - August 13

Students will start switching to Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science classes. We will have the rosters up in the POD Monday morning and will make sure we take time to talk about and practice these transitions. As students move into their new classes, it will also be important to take some time develop community, routines and norms. We will also be introducing our new organizational tools surrounding student notebooks and folders.

For our first unit of the year, students will be learning about integers, rational and irrational numbers. In addition, we will be looking at squares, cubes, square and cube roots and scientific notation. We will get started this week with our unit pre-assessment and first lessons on number sense.
