Weekly Update - May 28

Students will complete their final unit will use volume of cylinders and cones to solve a theoretical problem that a company in Flint, Michigan has to solve when they realize their water has lead and isn't fit to drink anymore. They now have to to buy water in water cooler-type jugs. This will be due May 31st.
Students will have to determine:
  1. How much water each employee drinks daily
  2. How many small conical water jug cups that is
  3. How many small conical water jug cups it takes to fill a cylindrical water jug
  4. How many water jugs they need a day, month and year
  5. How much a water jug costs
  6. How much extra money the company will need to budget for water

Weekly Update - May 20

This Monday, students will finish their 51-Food Ladder pythagorean theorem problem set that looked at different situations that required either a regular ladder or a ladder from a fire truck. Students used what the know from class, our field trip to the Thornton Fire Department and from previous problems to solve for height, ladder length, length of base from wall and weight of ladder.

Weekly Update - May 13

This week in math we will start with a field trip to Thornton Fire Station #4. We will get a lesson in fire safety and a tour of a ladder truck. This will set students up for our 51-foot ladder problem.

Students will

  • Read OSHA recommendation on safe ladder orientation, and interpret as a ratio
  • Calculate the distance a ladder should be placed from the ground (
  • Apply the Pythagorean Theorem in order to calculate how high a ladder will reach
  • Apply mathematics of ladder safety to other areas, e.g. fire trucks

Weekly Update - May 6

This week in math, students will play each other's Transformation Video Game levels. Students will be able to explain their image, level and see if their partner uses the correct code to get their image from the beginning to the end.
Our next unit will be problem-based. Students will become owners of a company in Flint, Michigan. They have learned that their water is not safe to drink so they must start buying their water. It will be the job of the student-owner to figure out how many conical water cooler cups their company uses, how many water cooler cylindrical containers this equal and how much that will cost the company to buy each day, month and year.

Weekly Update - April 30

This week, students will complete their Key Board lesson. This lesson gives students the chance to practice moving an object from one part of a grid and lay it on top of a similar object in another part of the grid using transformations. This is the basis for the video game grid they will make using their image from the earlier assignment. These lessons can be found in their Math OneNote Notebooks.

Weekly Update - April 16

The three days that students meet in math, students will continue their picture transformation project. This requires students to create an image, place it in a quadrant of the coordinate plane, label the points and then rotate, translate, and reflect it into the other three quadrants. Students will continue to use this image as we move forward in our transformations video game project by dilating their image by 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10.

Weekly Update - April 9

The two days that students meet in math, students will begin their picture transformation project. This requires students to create an image, place it in a quadrant of the coordinate plane, label the points and then rotate, translate, and reflect it into the other three quadrants. Students will continue to use this image as we move forward in our transformations video game project.

Welcome Back

Hello, Westgate families and welcome back for quarter four! This quarter we are looking forward to a strong end of the school year with lots of fun learning happening in the 7/8 pod. This week students will have a regular class schedule on Monday and Friday. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday students will participate in the English Language Arts CMAS testing in the afternoon. In the morning students will have science, social studies, and advocacy. The schedule for those days is as follows:

8:15-9:15 Specials
9:15-10:15 Science/SS A
10:15-11:15 Science/SS B
11:15-11:45 Advocacy
11:45-12:15 Recess and Lunch
12:45 - 3:15 Afternoon Testing
3:15- 3:30 Advocacy
3:30 Dismissal

As always we encourage our families to make sure their kids are well rested, and well fed before testing and school days.

Weekly Update - March 18

Students will spend this week reviewing concepts for the state CMAS assessment that we will go into more detail on during Q4 but have yet to cover. These include Transformations, The Pythagorean Theorem, Functions and Volume of Cylinders and Cones. Students have been watching video lessons, taking video notes and doing practice problems on these concepts. They are saving them in their math folders and will use this information in Q4.

Weekly Update - March 18

As we head into the end of Quarter 3, there are a few things we would like to bring your attention to.
  1. This week, on Monday the 19th through Wednesday the 21st, students will be taking the state CMAS math assessments in the afternoon. Please make sure students are well-rested, have a good breakfast and are ready and at school for these assessments. These tests are an important measure of the student's academic progress and one measure of the school's success in fulfilling its charter. In the mornings for these days, students will have Electives, Language Arts and Math. There will be no Social Studies or Science classes this week.
  2. This week on Thursday the 22nd and Friday the 23rd, we will have Parent-Teacher Conferences. Students will not have school on those days.
  3. March 26th - April 6th: Spring Break

Weekly Update - March 11

All students will finish their Systems of Equations test on Monday. As students are finishing they will spend the rest of the week reviewing concepts for the state CMAS assessment that we will go into more detail on during Q4 but have yet to cover. These include Transformations, The Pythagorean Theorem, Functions and Volume of Cylinders and Cones.

Math Test on Wednesday

Hi,
Students will be taking their math test on systems of Equations on Wednesday. I sent home an assignment to finish and a packet to study. There are also videos on each of these concepts on our OneNote that students can watch again. (I recommend this!)
Systems of Equations by Graphing
Systems of Equations by Elimination
Systems of Equations by Substitution

Weekly Update - March 4

Students were introduced to Solving Systems of Equations using substitution and started working on their Video Notes and Practice Problems. As I was gone Wednesday - Friday, I will be checking in to see the progress they have made on their Video Notes, Practice Problems and Assignment. Based on this, students will take a test on Tuesday or Wednesday. Students will then be introduced to a few concepts we haven't covered yet in preparation for the State CMAS assessment. We will then go into those concepts in more detail during Quarter 4.
