Westgate Spirit Week                        

  • Monday, Dec. 15 – Pajama/Onesie Day Roll out of bed and head to school in your coziest pajamas or onesie! 
  • Tuesday, Dec. 16 – Ugly Sweater Day Break out your most festive and tacky (school appropriate) holiday sweater. 
  • Wednesday, Dec. 17 – Anything But a Backpack Day Get creative and bring your school supplies in something unexpected!

Through fun activities and conversations, students discovering how to recognize their emotions, express them kindly, and understand the feelings of others. This year, our service-learning program has focused on learning about animals in shelters. Students have explored what animal shelters are, why they are important, and how we can support the animals and staff through small yet meaningful acts of service. 

As part of this learning, we are thrilled to welcome a special guest—Longmont Humane Society—for the next two Fridays: November 14th and November 21st! 

Here’s what’s planned for each visit: 

  • Friday, November 21st: Students will play Pet Care Jeopardy and meet Lexi, a very special tripod dog! 

If your child has any allergies or sensitivities that may be affected by animal visits, please let me know as soon as possible. 

We’re so excited for these opportunities to connect our learning with real-world experiences and deepen our compassion for animals.

1-2 Field Trip to Four Mile Park 

 1st and 2nd grades are going on a field trip to Four Mile Historic Park on Tuesday, November 11. Please complete the permission form here by Friday, November 7. In addition, send your student with a sack lunch, comfortable walking shoes, and a water bottle for the day. 

    We are in search of two chaperones per class for this field trip. If you are interested in being a chaperone, please complete a background check here and email your child's teacher. Background checks remain valid for one year. Please note that not all adults who complete background checks will be accepted to chaperone, and you will be notified if you are selected. 

We are looking forward to a fun day filled with hands-on explorations of history!

KinderQuest Fall on the Farm 

Join us November 7th for our Fall on the Farm KinderQuest event! Children ages 4-6 can experience the magic of our campus through a variety of farm-themed activities and interactive stations. 

 

Westgate Community Food Drive - October 28th - November 5th 

As the holidays approach, we want to support our families in every way we can! One thing we hope to take off your plate this season is the worry about food. We’ll be hosting a Food Drive to help support our Westgate community of families.

Our party is on Friday, October 31st from 1:15-2:15 PM.  For our 1-2 Pod Halloween party, please review the available slots below and sign up for snacks/drinks to bring. Please remember to send store-bought items with a nutrition label.  Items can be sent to school with your child anytime prior to our 1st & 2nd Grade Pod party. Please make sure that all items are labeled 1-2 party before dropping them off. 

Please contact your child's advocacy teacher if you would like to volunteer for our party.  You must have a current background check on file in order to volunteer. We will contact volunteers who are selected to assist with the party.

Halloween Costume Expectations  

Costume expectations for all Adults and students:  

  • No Masks or face coverings  
  • No Full-Face Paint (partial face paint is allowed if a student can apply it themselves in the time they have to get ready before class parties).  Face paint may not be worn to school.  
  • No Weapons or anything that can be used as a weapon  
  • No inappropriate or offensive costumes – all body parts must be covered  
  • Students K-8 may NOT WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL.  Students can bring their costumes and they should stay in their backpacks until they are allowed to change into them at 1:30, prior to the parties. Students will be in regular classes during the morning, and the costumes and their pieces and parts should not be a distraction.  
  • Adults and HS students can wear their costume to school, but all above expectations must be followed.

LET'S GOGH FUN RUN - September 26th, 2025 

This year’s Fun Run is all about fueling creativity! We’re rallying together to support our incredible Art program, led by the talented Ms. Houghton. 

With your help, we hope to raise funds for exciting new tools that will bring student projects to life—like DSLR and film cameras, a tabletop darkroom, linoleum cutting supplies, film rolls, developing chemicals, a full class set of alcohol markers, and clay molds. Every lap our students run helps unlock these artistic opportunities, and every flat-rate donation from family and friends brings us closer to a more vibrant, hands-on art experience for all. Let’s run for imagination, inspiration, and innovation! 

SCHEDULE OF RUN TIMES: 

  • 5th & 6th Grade:  8:30 - 8:50 
  • 3rd & 4th Grade:  9:00 - 9:15 
  • 7th & 8th Grade:  9:25 - 9:50

PARENT CHEER SECTION: 

We encourage parents to come and cheer their student(s) on! We will be racing around the track. A parent area will be set up near the pavilion on the right side of the track. Yearly hearing and vision screenings are coming up: 

  • September 15:  K-3 
  • September 16: 5th, 7th, and 9th grade 

  

Please remind your students to wear their glasses or contacts on these days. Parents will only be notified of the results if students do not pass the screenings.

This month, our August Advocacy theme is RISE!   

At Westgate, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a part of our Whole Child Education program. PBIS is a system in which students, staff and the community create a set of school-wide behavioral expectations/core values, we teach those expectations in all our various environments, and then we CELEBRATE when we see students doing those things! At Westgate, we RISE (Respect, Integrity, Safety, Empathy).

Welcome!

Hello!

 

My name is Mrs. Koenig and I am your child’s Advocacy Teacher/ Advocate. Advocacy is more than just Homeroom. Advocacy classes are first and foremost a time for students to build supportive relationships with their peers and with an adult they can trust, as well as learn about social and emotional health. It is a time for everyone to feel recognized and welcomed into the classroom and school community. As your child’s Advocate, I will be your primary point of communication, so feel free to reach out to me at any time. I am committed to advocating for your child this year.

I am very excited to be teaching at Westgate this year. This will be my third year teaching at Westgate. I graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor Degree in Portuguese Arts in Brazil. In 2021, I graduated from University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education. In the last 15 years, I have worked as a preschool teacher, substitute teacher, second grade teacher and a first-grade teacher. I am also a Westgate mom. 

 

When I am not in the classroom, I am hanging out with my husband, son and 2 dogs, practicing yoga, hiking, gardening, biking, traveling or reading. 

 

I am excited to embark in this journey with you and your child this year!

This month, our August Advocacy theme is RISE!

At Westgate, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a part of our Whole Child Education program. PBIS is a system in which students, staff and the community create a set of school-wide behavioral expectations/core values, we teach those expectations in all our various environments, and then we CELEBRATE when we see students doing those things! At Westgate, we RISE (Respect, Integrity, Safety, Empathy).

What does RESPECT mean?

Being kind to people, property, and yourself. Being considerate of our community.

What does INTEGRITY mean?

Telling the truth and doing the right thing even when nobody is looking.

What does it mean to be SAFE at school?

Act in ways that won’t harm yourself or others.

What is EMPATHY?

Understanding and caring about the feelings of others.

 

We will be teaching students what these 4 words mean—focusing on a different part of RISE each week—and what it looks like to live these values out during school and at home. We will use RISE all year to celebrate positive behaviors.
