Posts

May 22 - 26

The highlights this week are that the students will finish sharing their Civic Project Islands and then reflect on the skills for Social Studies this year, Geography, History, Economics, and Civics.  The students will be sharing their Civic Projects and reflection sheet with you on Thursday during the Open House.

I have enjoyed all the students and their change in attitude about Social Studies! We had a great year!

May 15-19

Students will be finishing up their Civic Island Projects and present on Thursday and Friday.

Next the students will read about National Parks across the United States and Plan a trip itinerary.

May 8-11

The students have finished their research and planning for the Civic Island Project and are working on their final projects.  Some super creative ideas and Civics knowledge is being applied to these projects.

After the students finish, they will be planning a travel itinerary applying geography, ancient civilizations, economics and civics to their plan to showcase their overall learning in Social Studies this year.

May 1-5

The focus is the Civics Island Project.

After the project was introduction the expectations, and they the students had the option to work solo or with a partner.  We are taking the project in chunks to be thorough while creating government, Laws, and the general make up of how the Island will operate.

I will be checking in daily with the students to check for progress and offer suggestions to make sure all characteristics are included in the planning stages.

April 24-29

The students at the end of the week practicing putting a Bill into a law and the process that is followed in our government.

We will review all the Civics vocabulary, and the students will start brainstorming for creating their own Island creating a government, laws, and the Civic characteristics that will be included in their Island.

April 17-21

With all of the interruptions this week in Social Studies we didn't get as far as I had hoped.  We will focus on the three different branches of government and the Checks and Balances system.

April 10 - 14

For the week we will continue working on your Civics unit.  We will review the 1st Ten Amendments.  We will then dive deeper into the three Branches of Government and practice these by having the students be assigned to a branch and we will have a mock Government.

April 3 - 7

We will have Social Studies class on Monday and Friday of this week, as Tuesday through Thursday we will be taking the CMAS in 6th grade.

Monday we will take some notes on the Principles of Constitution and then Friday we will dive into the First ten Amendments. We will have an activity where the students will be given a scenario and they will have to determine which Amendment would address each scenario.

Mar. 27-31

Welcome back!

We finished our unit on Economics and the students did an incredible job at creating their business models and sharing with each other!  I hope that they learned about the real world some!

Our next unit for Quarter 4 will be Civics and Government.  We will start this week by learning and exploring the Civics vocabulary and components.  After the students learn the foundation, they will again use that information on a new project!

Mar. 6-8

The students will not have Social Studies class on Monday afternoon as Mrs. Schneider will be coming into our classes to talk about puberty.

Tuesday and Wednesday the students will display their business model and share with the class. As the students observe the business models, they will be filling out a "Shark Tank" sheet and then we will have a follow up discussion.

Feb. 27 - Mar. 3

Economics is still the focus.

The students have been loving this project of creating their own budget and building their own business with or without a business partner. After the students created their budget, I then created scenarios which made them lose their career. All of their mouths dropped!  I then told them that they still have bills and need to create a business that would still cover their expenses.

The creativity that is flowing out of the kids and the reality of the real world is shocking them of the cost of things.

I plan to have the students display their business models for the whole class to view. I hope this will happen the following week.

Feb. 21-24

We are moving forward with our Economics Unit.  The kids were so excited and engaged to create their own budget.  What they will find out next week, is they have lost their job and will now have to create their own business.  There will be several steps that the students will need to think about and plan for before they get to their final business proposal and implementation of their business. The more economic and vocabulary words that are woven into their business the better it will be!  Make sure to ask your child about their personal budget and their thoughts.

Feb. 13-16

This week we will focus on looking at the different Economic Systems as well as the students creating their own personal budget.

From there the students will be given a project to complete that will include all of the components that we have student so far in Social Studies.

Feb. 6-10

Economics is the focus in Social Studies.
The students will learn the difference between goods and services and the different types of economies by taking notes and doing active lessons for a deeper understanding.

Jan. 30 - Feb. 1

Monday the students will compare and contrast two Native American tribes using a three-paragraph essay. They will use the notes from last week to brainstorm their ideas and then from there write their essay.

Tuesday through Friday the students will begin learning about economics starting with vocabulary and then moving into taking notes.
