Advocacy Update Week of September 21st

Welcome back for another wonderful week at Westgate! As we near the end of the quarter, I wanted to take a moment to give you some information on upcoming or current events.

Schedule with SAT

This week, Seniors will be taking the SAT on Wednesday (this is the test that was delayed from Spring of 2020). There will be no online classes or advocacies on Wednesday, September 23rd as all high school teachers will be helping administer the SAT. This is not the Juniors’ SAT, which will be administered in the spring.

Conferences

Conferences will be held virtually on October 1st and 2nd through Zoom. On Thursday the 1st, they will take place from 8 AM to 8 PM. On Friday the 2nd, they will occur from 8 AM to Noon. Please use the link on your student’s advocacy page to sign up for a 20-minute time slot. When conferences are near, you will be emailed the information to access your conference through Zoom. Please sign up if you would like a conference. We will not be able accommodate unscheduled virtual walk-ins.

Quarter 2 Updates

High School will continue distance learning in Quarter 2. Like now, students will be invited to come to Westgate for in-person learning once a month. Many high school students are taking college courses or finding jobs, and they have built their personal schedules around all of life’s activities. We are staying online through the semester in order to accommodate whatever schedules students have created, to maintain fluidity and minimize disruption, and to continue to be aligned with FRCC who is also remaining online for the semester. We will continue to share updates about Quarter 2 and our responsive learning model as we have them. There is no current news on the schedule for second semester.

Service Learning

With classes being held virtually, Service Learning looks a little different this semester. Each advocacy is researching a topic centered around the idea of “Students as Changemakers.” Students complete research or projects weekly to work towards their class’ overall goal. Not being able to meet in-person, students are currently running projects that rely on a heavy amount of research or community education.

Advocacy Themes

Advocacies address certain themes each month. Advocates discuss these topics with their classes in order to educate, encourage, and build community.
