10 minute Math Practice Each Day

1st and 2nd grade will be including 10 minutes of math practice each day as an assignment for every student beginning next week. We believe this daily practice is important for growth and retention of math concepts school-wide.  Just as we ask for students to read 10- 20 minutes each day, we are now adding daily math practice to our expectations. This assignment will not replace any standards-based instruction during math class but will be a supplement to support on-going growth.

  • 1st and 2nd grade will be doing this through MobyMax as it assesses the individual needs of each child. It allows students to close gaps or accelerate at their own pace. Click the underlined words to be linked to the flyer for more support  "Using MobyMax from Home"  or "Uso de Moby desde casa
  •

Enrichment Opportunities!

Katie Goforth and Julie Ruhl will be hosting grade level Social Zooms for all students throughout the day every Friday. Social Zooms are intended to be an unstructured space for kids to connect. Click Here to register for FREE virtual viewing!

Picture Retake:

Picture days will be Wednesday, October 28, and Thursday, October 29. These days are for students and staff who did not get their picture taken in September, and for students who would like retakes. *Retakes will only be given if the student brings the original photo package back to the photographer.* In general, we will be photographing in-person learners on Wednesday (because that is not costume day!) and online learners on Thursday. Online learners need to contact [email protected] for a time slot for Thursday. A staff member will be coming to the classrooms on Wednesday with the list of those students who did not already get the picture taken.

The Advocacy Theme for October will be Bullying Prevention.

October is Bullying Prevention Month and we have the honor of doing a virtual screening of the documentary The Upstanders. Being an upstander is being someone who takes action when you see someone being bullied. You are bound to see some familiar faces as the documentary was filmed at Westgate.

Halloween (COVID version):

Students can wear costumes on Thursday, October 29th in honor of Halloween. Students can only wear their COVID mask (no Halloween masks or full painted faces). We will not have a class party and students cannot bring snacks to share. If your child bring snacks, your teacher will confiscate it and eat it.

Reminders to bring in-person:

-Bring a cold lunch that does not need microwaved unless you ordered a hot lunch. Even if you ordered lunch, please send your student with an extra snack or two.

-Water bottle and extra snack

-At least 2 masks.

-Students need to bring their materials and supplies to class. For example: pencils, markers and anything that came in the blue materials bag from the beginning of the year. Also bring the colored folders as well, these will go back and forth every day from home to school.

-Please do not bring toys/personal items other than books or drawing/coloring materials to class.

Carline:

Morning Drop-Off

To maintain COVID safety protocols and cohort integrity during carline, there will not be any parking and parent escorted walk-up.  Non-students are to remain in the vehicle.  Also, we ask that families conduct the health check at home.  If it is not, we will conduct it at school during drop-off but this will significantly slow carline for all families.

Afternoon Pick-Up

We will be utilizing a system that uses a unique number, printed on a car tag, for each family.  The car tag will be displayed from inside the car and visible to staff during pick-up.  Carline staff will communicate to the classrooms. Sibling classrooms will be notified at the same time.   This provides a streamlined and contactless pick-up procedure that allows us to prevent cohort mixing and ensure COVID health and safety standards. As with morning drop-off, no parking is permitted during carline. Please remind your student to move quickly to your car once they are dismissed. This way carline continues to move quickly.

The  Parent Carline Norms and Procedures.docx contains a map along with a list of frequently asked questions addressing such things as carpool, what happens if you forget your tag and more.
