Math Update 10/21/2019

Hello Parents,

This week your student is focusing on Unit Three, which is working with numbers 0-10.

In Unit Three, students will focus on counting, recognizing, identifying, and writing numbers 0-10; as well as using a variety of methods to model ways 0-10 may look like.

Ways you can help support your student at home with math are as following:
  • Practice Counting
  • Model quantities of numbers (Ex: showing 10 items to represent the number 10).
  • Practice writing numbers
Thank you
-Ms. Phillips

Math Update 10/15/2019

Hello Parents!

Yesterday we did a pre-assessment on Unit Two to see how well students knew the numbers 0-5, recognize patterns, as well as sort and match objects. The students did an amazing job , so I decided to move on to Unit Three!

Kindergarten Math Week of September 9th

In math this week, we are solidifying the 1:1 correspondence skill without error at least to ten.

We will apply this skill to another goal of being able to represent numbers in different ways. We will use ten frames, counting cubes, counting bears, and other objects of interest applying count and touch, count and scoot, and count and check methods to insure fluency with the skill in 2D and 3D materials.

You can support kids at home by showing them how you count items to make sure you don't miscount. For instance, if you are doing a puzzle and you want to make sure you have all the pieces before you start, you might first pile them up and then start scooting individual pieces off the pile to make sure you stay organized with counting, don't count the same piece twice, or you don't miss any.

Kindergarten Math Week of August 26th

In math this week, we will be working on accepting peer and teacher feedback on the quality of work. Children will be expected to do their best and redo work that is rushed or given little effort.

Children will be expected to start explaining their reasoning in regards to the choices they make when given the option to represent numbers in different ways. For instance, if they are trying to represent the number 15, I will be asking them why they decided to use a ten frame or why they chose to use counting bears to represent the number. I will ask them how that choice helped them to accomplish the task or if another way might have been a better option.

You can support at home by observing how your child plays and asking them to tell you more about why they decided to chose that particular activity. We are starting to help them think about their thinking.

Kindergarten Math Week of August 19th

This week, we are continuing to assess what skills and knowledge children are coming into kindergarten with. The things we are checking for this week include number recognition, counting with 1:1 correspondence, counting by rote, and what knowledge they already have with colors, shapes, and patterns.

Students are learning how to read and use calendars and schedules. And, we are working on writing numbers.

Some great questions to get kids talking about what they're doing in math are, "Which do you like better, writing numbers on the whiteboards or doing the calendar with your class?" and "Why do you like that one the best?"
