Q and A

Questions I have received from parents and students with answers:

1. What Zoom meetings does my child need to be present for?
I would highly suggest that your child is present for their Advocacy Zoom meeting. This is held with their Advocacy teacher. However, we also are aware that some students won't be able to make the meeting.

2. What are "office hours" and does my child need to be present during this time?
"Office hours" is the time in which the teacher is available by Zoom to answer any questions from either parents or students. Students do not need to be present during this time but are welcome to attend to check in or ask their questions. Parents, feel free to attend to ask questions of the teacher. Being that the purpose of this time is to answer questions, attendees without questions will be muted in order to keep the time available and appropriate to the purpose.

3. Who is in charge of my students learning?
The teachers in the 3/4 Pod are planning together so that students will still get the standards that would have been taught in the school room this quarter. However, in order to simplify the distance learning, which is new to all of us, students have been grouped in their Advocacy classes and will receive most/all of their assignments and information from their Advocacy teacher. The parents primary contact for all classes should be their child's Advocacy teacher.

Dear parents,

As Spring Break comes to a close, teachers are working hard to plan for online learning. As such, you will be receiving the Moby Max login for your child today. More information regarding the online learning will be posted tomorrow. On a side note, it has been determined that the  Emergency Paper Work Packets that were sent home at the end of the quarter will be optional. I look forward to working with the students again!

Best wishes,
Mrs. Maslen

3rd Grade Literacy- Week of 3/16/2020

Due to the school closure, I gave each student two packets. (Note: If your child was not here on Friday, you can stop at the Westgate office and pick up your child's packets or email me and I can send a digital copy.) One packet has a blue colored title page; this packet is in case school is closed longer than our Spring Break. The second packet has a white blank cover sheet (because the printer was being wonky); this packet is the work due for this week. (Students can return the work when they return to school).

In the white packet, you will find a writing prompt, a verb tense worksheet, and a few editing warm-ups (they can use the editing codes file located below this post). Instead of the normal reading log, I have included a spring break reading challenge. Students can pick 10 or more of the activities; each activity needs to be a minimum of 20 minutes! If the majority of the students bring this reading challenge back completed, I will reward the class with extra recess and learning time outside.

Please email me if you have any questions at [email protected]

3rd Grade Language Arts: Week of March 9, 2020

Note: Students will not have a new spelling list this week. I want to make sure they have all their spelling work turned in as Wednesday is the last day that I will be accepting this quarter's assignments.

Students are working on creating a graphic organizer that will help them create a strong paragraph. Students will also be practicing using transition words and phrases in their paragraph.

Work due: Reading logs will be due on Friday but will go on the grades for next quarter.

3rd Grade Language Arts- Week of 2/24/20

Students will begin the week by completing their literacy analysis of "Ruby Bridges" and "Honoring King." We will then review the CMAS practice test. Spelling test will be given on Friday. Spelling words and reading logs will be emailed home on Monday morning.

Students are also beginning their literacy group books. A literacy job will be due each week. I will post corresponding calendars by the end of the day Monday.

3rd Grade Language Arts- Week of 2/19/2020

We have a short week this week. As such, we will focus our energy on completing a CMAS practice test, reviewing test taking strategies, and reviewing the test.

There are no spelling words this week.

Reading log is due on Friday for the entire week - 2/21/20.

3rd Grade Language Arts- Week of February 3, 2020

Students will continue working with informational text in preparation for answering an informational text prompt. Students will work on understanding the main points of two different texts, "Walking Tall" and "Honoring King." After which, students will work on identifying main details.

Home reading logs are due on Friday. Student spelling test will also be given to students on Friday. (You should have received an email with your students spelling documents and this week's reading log).
