Week of March 16th

Each student should read the entire Week 19 newspaper that was sent home on Friday.  If they were not here to get the newspaper on Friday, everything can be accessed online (directions below). For each article, they should highlight or underline key information.  After each article, there are 3 comprehension questions they should answer.  Once they have read and completed all articles, they should complete the crossword puzzle on the back of the newspaper.  They should also take the Week 19 quiz.

3. Their username is the same as their Westgate name (firstname.lastname / john.smith).  Please note that a very small number of students have a number at the end of this.  If they do not remember, please e-mail me and I will sent you their exact username.
4.  Their password is 123456.
5. Click on the newspaper
6.  Click on Week 19
7.  All of the articles are on the left-hand side.  There is a green button to take the test when they have read all the articles.
 
 
 

Week of March 9th

Week 18 is titled Centennial Statehood.  We will explore the ways in which Colorado became a state in 1876 and what people did in order to make this important event happen.  Due to service learning on Friday, we will have our quiz on Thursday.  Please check InfiniteCampus to see if your child has any missing assignments so they can be completed before Friday. 

Week of March 2nd

This week, we will be focusing on Week 17 which is entitled Land Claims & Conflicts. We will be learning about William Bent and his role in the shaping of Colorado.  We will also learn about conflicts between the white settlers and the Native Americans.  Specifically, we will understand the events that led up to the Sand Creek Massacre.  Due to service learning on Friday, our quiz will be on Thursday.

Week of February 24th

This week, we will continue to work on week 16 in Studies Weekly. This week is titled Transportation & Communication, and focuses on the building of the railroad systems in Colorado.  Our quiz will be on Friday. 

Week of February 19th

This week, we will begin Week 16 in Studies Weekly.  This week is titled Transportation & Communication, and focuses on the building of the railroad systems in Colorado.  There will be no quiz this week.

Week of February 10th

This week, we will be working on Week 15 of Studies Weekly which focuses on the Gold Rush in Colorado.  Our quiz will be on Thursday.  Students also have an online account to Studies Weekly.  If you would like to see this week's newspaper, go to www.studiesweekly.com.  Your child's username should be firstname.lastname and the password is 123456.  Some students have usernames with numbers added.  Your child should know this.  If you can't login, feel free to e-mail me.

Week of February 3rd

This week, we will focus on Week 14 of our Studies Weekly.  This focuses on Famous Colorado Pioneers.  We will learn and understand the contributions of certain people such as Clara Brown, Frances Wisebart Jacobs, & William N. Byers.  We will have a quiz on Thursday since we have service learning on Friday. 

Week of January 27th

This week, we will continue to work on Week 13, which focuses on life on the frontier.  Students will compare/contrast their lives to children's lives from the 1800's in Colorado.  Our week 13 quiz will be on Thursday.

Week of January 21st

This week, we will have limited time in social studies due to the day off, the field trip, & service learning.  However, we will begin Week 13 of Studies Weekly which focuses on life on the frontier.  Students will understand what early life was like in Colorado as many people begin to colonize the area.  There will be no quiz this week. 

Week of January 13th

This week, we will work on resetting norms, rules, & procedures in the classroom.  In addition, we will begin our work on Week 12 which is entitled Explorers of the Land.  This mostly focuses on exploration in general, but highlights John Wesley Powell who made expeditions in the Colorado area.  There will be a quiz on Week 12 on Friday.  

Week of December 16th

This week, we will continue to work on Week 11, which focuses on Zebulon M. Pike and other expeditions in Colorado.  Students will finish their Week 11 quiz on Monday. 

Week of December 9th

This week, we will focus on early Colorado expeditions and how the land was mapped and explored.  We will focus on the expeditions of Zebulon M. Pike and how his explorations paved the way to Colorado statehood. 

Week of December 2nd

This week, we will focus on the European explorers & settlers who first came to Colorado.  We will discuss the influences of these people and determine how Colorado was disputed by different countries/cultures. 

Week of November 18th

This week, we will begin week 9 in our Studies Weekly newspaper.  This will cover early pioneers of Colorado & the fur trapping & trading that occurred early on in Colorado's history.  There will be a quiz on Thursday.  

Week of November 12th

This week, we will work on Week 8 of our Studies Weekly Newspaper.  This will cover tribes of Colorado's Mountain Region & Plateau.  This includes tribes such as the Ute & Navajo.  We will have a quiz on this week's material on Monday, November 18th due to our service learning this Friday.
