From Rochelle Goforth:

Dear Westgate Community,

Due to the predicted inclement weather and unsafe road conditions, all after school clubs and activities have been cancelled for Wednesday, March 13th, 2019.  Please stay safe and thank you for your understanding.

We will send out any additional updates as needed.

Thank you!

Math Workshop 3/11/19

Hello Parents!
This week we are looking at various patterns found on our 100 grid. Students will continue to practice counting on from any number from 0-100. We will have fun exploring skip counting by 10's and making life size base ten blocks. You can support you student at home by making counting on fun. You can shout out a "mystery number" and then your student must count on from that number to 100.

Math Workshop 3/4/19

Dear Family,

This unit is all about comparing and combining sets up to 20. Students will also find the difference between two sets.

Unit Vocabulary:

compare: students will compare sets up to 20 by stating whether there is more or less

count: students will be able to count objects in a set up to 20

How to support your students at home:

This is a great time to play a game with cards ... WAR!  Take out the J, Q, K, and A.  Play a game of war with greater number.  Divide the cards among players.  Each player flips over a card.  The player with the number greater gets the cards.  Play until one player runs out of cards.

Math Workshop 2/25/19

Hello,
This week we will continue studying the number families from the 20’s through the 90’s. We will look for patterns while skip counting and look for those patterns in our world.

Supporting your student at home
practice skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

IMPORTANT: Kindness Week 2/11-2/14

We have a lot going on this week so here are a few important reminders:

February 11th-13th is Kindness week! We will be doing Kindness activities all week!

February 13th is Hundreds day! Children are welcome to dress up like they are 100 years old!

We will be providing a 100’s day snack that day, but if your child has allergies or wants to opt out, you can still have them bring their own snack.

February 13th 6pm - 8pm Family Dance!

February 14th is Valentines day! NO CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED TO BRING VALENTINES!!! Instead, Westgate makes Kindness cards and delivers them to businesses in our community. We will be taking a field trip to the bus barn to pass our kindness cards out! Permission slips should have been sent home in Friday Folders last week. We should be back in time for normal pick up for half day students. I will be reaching out to chaperones this week!

February 15th- NO SCHOOL: Teacher professional Development

February 18th- NO SCHOOL: Presidents day

February 21st- Field trip to Childrens WOW! Museum. Permission slips coming as soon as we have approval of buses. Half day pickup will be later (more information will be on the permission slip).

Math Workshop 1/28/19

Dear Family,
We will continue learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
This unit is all about recognizing and identifying flat and solid shapes in our
environment.
Unit Vocabulary:
cone: a 3d shape that has a circle bottom and a pointed top
cylinder: a 3d shape that looks like a can
sphere: a 3d shape that looks like a ball
cube: a 3d shape that has six square sides
circle: a round shape
triangle: a shape that has three equal sides
square: a shape that has four equal sides

rectangle: a shape that has two short sides and two long sides

hexagon: a shape that has six sides

vertex/corner: the corner where 2 sides meet

side: a line in a shape

face: flat side of a shape

How to Support Your Student at Home:
As you are in your car or at home, identify objects around the house and what shape they are. Example: A door is a rectangle.

Tomorrow is Class Picture Day 1/18/19

Hello Parents,

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is Class Picture Day. Order forms were sent home on Monday and I have only had 2 students return their order to me. I will be sending home an extra order form with students today so please check your student’s backpack. I have also attached a scan of the directions to order online if necessary.

Kindergarten will be first to have their picture taken so please be sure to arrive to school on time and send the order form with your student.

Thank you so much!

Mrs. Matthews

Math Workshop 1/14/19

Hello!
This week we will be reviewing procedures and routines after our long holiday break. Students will review the teens family and practice making teens using a group of 10 and "some more". We will continue counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. You can support your student by practicing skip counting at home!
Enjoy your week!

Math Workshop 12/10/2018

Dear Family,

For the next two weeks we will be naming, recognizing, counting, and writing numbers 10-19. The teens can be the most challenging group of numbers, so practice and support at home can come in helpful. We will continue counting aloud to 100 and skip counting by 5's, and 10's.

Unit Vocabulary

count: students will be able to state numbers in a sequence 10-19

tens: students will be able to identify sets of ten in making numbers 10-19

ones: students will be able to identify how many ones are left over after making a set of ten for numbers 10-19

digit: any of the numbers from 0-9

Strategies to Support Your Student at Home

Using paper clips, cereal, etc. have your child make a group of ten and show you how many more they need to make 16. (They would have a group of ten and a group of six)

Math Workshop 12/3/2018

Dear Family,

This week we wrap up our unit on comparing and ordering objects according to their measureable attributes.

Unit Vocabulary

length: students will be able to tell how long something is and compare their length – taller, shorter. same

height: students will be able to tell how tall something is and compare their height by tallest, shortest, same

weight: students will be able to tell how much something weighs and compare – heavier, lighter, same

capacity: students will be able to tell how much something holds and compare – holds more, less or the same

Strategies to Support Your Student at Home:

  • Bake something together.  Let them help measure using cups, tablespoons, etc.  Remind them that you need the right amount for a recipe.  If they get too much, tell them they need less.  If they get too little, tell them they need more.  Reinforce the vocabulary words.
  • Measure items around the house by comparing lengths.

Dear Family,

We are wrapping up unit 4 this week. This unit is all about comparing numbers to 10 with mathematical vocabulary.

Vocabulary:

count: students will be able to state numbers in a sequence 0-10

compare students will be able to compare objects/numbers by stating which is greater, less or equal

quantity: students will be able to count a set of objects and state how many are there

Strategies to help your student at home:

Using cereal have your child take two handfuls out.  Put in two separate piles.  Have them count and eat the group that has more/less.  You can use other types of food/snack as well. You can also practice counting forward and back from 0-20.
