Update for the Last Days of School

The Prodigy Math password is now 123456. The other passwords were hard for kids to remember. Now it is the same as the Superkids password ðŸ™‚

We are finalizing math work for the Dinosaur Museum this week and getting ready for kids to present to you at Student-led Conferences and at the museum!

Weekly Update 5/20/2019

So now that the children are feeling comfortable with weight, we are going to apply that knowledge to something that's harder to conceptualize. Dinosaurs!
This week, we'll compare each kid's dinosaur to something they are familiar with in everyday living to help them understand how much their researched dinosaur weighs.

Update 5/13/2019

This week in math we are continuing our measurement unit and continuing to learn measurements related to dinosaurs. This week, we will look at weight. You can support kids at home by weighing things around the house.

Update 5/6/2019

This week in Math we will be continuing out Measurement Unit. This week we will also be continuing our final end of the year cumulative project about dinosaurs. We will be measuring how many feet can go in a TRex track, how tall dinosaurs were, and using Dinosaurs to help us measure to the nearest inch!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! May 30th from 5:30-6:30pm will be our Dinosaur Museum. Please come to check out the hard work we will be completing for the remainder of the year!

Update 4/29/2019

Tomorrow, I will be introducing the children to our problem based learning project all about Dinosaurs. This is expected to be a very fun, engaging and exciting way to bring together many math skills. For this week, we are specifically targeting skills with measurement. You can provide support at home by getting out dinosaur books or materials and helping your child conceptualize the size of creatures they are interested in. For example, you might use sidewalk chalk to draw a line as long as a T-Rex is tall.

I will also be reviewing the data from the assessments children took last week, and kids will work in small groups to bolster skills where necessary. If necessary, I will email you for specific support at home requests toward those goals.

Update 4/22/2019

This week in Math we will be continuing our time unit with telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour using digital and analog clocks. We are also covering how days of the week and months of the year are measurements of time. They don't know them perfectly yet, but hopefully pretty soon they'll come home singing days of the week and months of the year songs. If they do, you can support them at home by listening to them, and if they don't you can show them how your family uses calendars and clocks to get things done.

weekly update 4/15/2019

This week in math we are FINALLY moving onto Time. This unit will take us two weeks. We will begin slowly this week with learning about analog clocks and digital clocks and talking about things we can do in one minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes and one hour. You can support at home by checking out clocks around your house.

Update 4/8/2019

In math, we are continuing to work with shapes, and focusing on attributes of shapes. We will be counting corners and sides and comparing shape attributes. Now that you've probably had your child pointing out shapes in the real world around you, have them tell you how they know it is that shape. By the end of the week, you could be asking them how many sides and corners it has.

Update 3/18/19

This week in Math, we will be wrapping up our 2D shape exploration. The children have really been getting things into shape this week! You can support them at home by enjoying one of their favorite shape videos with them. Here is the link...
It's pretty catchy and a lovely bedtime song to sing with them.

If you didn't get a chance to sign up for conferences on Thursday and Friday, email me at [email protected]

Update 3/11/2019

This week begins a very popular subject in kindergarten! We begin learning how to recognize shapes in our world and name them. You can encourage your child to notice shapes as you drive around, or even just hanging out at home. We start with 2D shapes this week.

Weekly Update March 4th, 2019

This week we are expanding skills with place value. The song we use is to the tune of Dreidel.
Bundle Bundle Bundle
We made a group of ten
We moved it to the tens place and then we start again.

Sing this at home with kids to reinforce the concept.

Weekly Update 2/25/19

Kids are now going to decide when to add and when to subtract to solve problems with depth and complexity in math workshop. You can support them add home by showing them how you decide if you need to add or subtract when you are solving problems. For example, when preparing snacks for an outing over the weekend, you might throw in one snack and then say something about how many people are going, and that you need to add some snacks. Then, maybe throw in too many and say you have too many now, and will subtract so that you have exactly enough for everyone.

Weekly Update 2/19/19

In math this week, we are continuing to do math workshop with depth and complexity to solve math problems. Our goal by the end of the week is to be comfortable with using math language to describe subtraction work, and to represent subtraction in multiple ways. To support at home, demonstrate practical subtraction with your children. For instance, if you are getting the silverware to set the dinner table, you might grab a handful of forks. Then, say oh there are only four people eating dinner tonight, so I will take away some of these forks and put them back in the drawer. You could then count how many you grabbed to begin with, and show that if you take away four, how many will you need to put back in the drawer. Let your child solve the problem with you. Really focus on the words "take away," "subtract," and "minus" where you can.

Weekly Update 2/11/2019

This week in math, we finish up some presentations about the "Dog Sled" problem. You can ask them how one boy helped the other by letting him borrow dogs to pull his sled that was too full of fish to move. In the "Hot Cocoa" problem, kids are continuing to learn to use math language and to find the details in a story to help them find solutions to problems.

Update February 4th, 2019

We are doing more depth and complexity investigations in math workshop this week. In the spirit of the 100th day of school, we will be building 100 several materials and use patterns to get to 100 in various ways. On Thursday, it is officially the 100th day, and kids could dress up like they are 100 years old if they want to. You can support them at home by seeing if you can find collections of 100 things that they can show us in class. Please make sure it will fit in their backpacks, like 100 Legos.
