Mrs. Dorschner Science

Course Description

Posts

Week of 2/18 - 2/22

This week students will be learning about different climate types and climate zones.  They will map out different climate zones on the planet, and learn about why certain areas have certain climates.

Week of 2/11 - 2/15

This week in Science students will continue their research of how weather and climate are different.  They will learn about climate change, and have a guest lesson from Ms. Valenza, our Environmental Ed. teacher about how they can be proactive against climate change.

Week of 2/4-2/8

This week we will be finishing up our study of weather, learning how to read data from tables and how to graph the information to understand weather patterns and how seasons affect weather over time.  Ms. Valenza will also be teaching us about how the weather affects our very own animals at Westgate.

Week of 1/28 - 2/1

This week students will present their weather posters with there groups.  We will also be learning more in depth information about weather, and making clouds in the classroom!

Week of 1/22 - 1/25

This week in Science we will be finishing our weather posters, and presenting them in front of the class.

1/14 - 1/18

This week in science we will begin learning about weather.  Students will read about different types of weather, and choose one topic to focus on.  In groups they will research that topic and create a poster about it.

Please consider volunteering for JA In A Day!

We Need a Volunteer Like YOU on Friday, January 25th for JA IN A DAY!

Kids believe they can be whatever they want when they grow up. And they’re right. But getting there isn’t always easy. No matter what your profession, your life experience and determination has prepared you to serve as a role model — not just to your children, but to their peers too.

Junior Achievement (JA) is partnering with Westgate to provide vital enrichment programs to students. In order for your school to take advantage of this exciting opportunity, we need your help to facilitate one of JA’s proven programs.   As a JA volunteer, you will use your life experience to become a role model for local students, teaching them about the “economics of life,” and helping them understand the fundamental connection between school and success.

You do not need any special financial skills or knowledge in order to volunteer. JA provides you with everything you need to be successful in the classroom. Volunteers receive training on how to use JA’s hands-on curriculum, and the teacher is there with you for support.

12/17 - 12/20

This week in Science we will be wrapping up plants and animals with a fun activity about evolution, adaptation, and natural selection.

Week of 12/10 - 12/14

This week in Science we will be learning about Natural Selection, and how animals slowly change and evolve over time in nature.

Week of 12/3 - 12/7

This week in Science we will be moving on from learning about human selection and begin learning about selection in nature.  There will be some hands on activities for students to understand how traits are passed on, and how survival of the fittest/extinction works! We will not be meeting for a couple of classes this week due to MAP testing.

Week of 11/26 - 11/30

In Science this week we will be taking our knowledge of human selection in plants and applying it to animals.  We will learn about how humans have selected certain traits in animals that they like, and bred their animals to increase these traits.

Week of 11/13 - 11/16

This week we'll be concentrating on animal habitats and environmental change - specifically we will be looking at how fossils can tell us what type of environment used to exist in different areas of the world.

Week of 11/5 - 11/9

We are leaving the life cycle of plants behind and moving on to animals! We will be doing interactive notebooks on different life cycles, watching a Brain Pop on animal classifications, and doing a Mystery Science activity on the different types of animals in the world.

Week of 10/29-11/2

This week will be the completion of our study of plant life cycles.  We will be concentrating on the ways that plants adapt, how humans affect them, and how that begins to connect with our next unit - animal life cycles.
