Week of May 28th

This week, students will continue to work on plot events for their novel.  They will work in small groups to create a flow map poster.  This will narrow the plot events to 5-10 of the most important events.  The groups will also add an illustration for each plot event they choose.  They will also read and analyze the short story A Game of Catch.

Week of May 20th

This week, students will practice the reading strategy 'synthesizing'.  As we finish our book club books, students will work on identifying key plot events, as well as theme. 

Week of May 13th

This week, students will continue to work on reading strategies as they read & discuss their novels within their book club.  We will work on making inferences, identifying vocabulary words (and determining their meaning through context), & synthesizing. 

Week of May 6th

This week, students will continue reading and discussing their books within their book clubs.  We will work on reading annotation strategies, such as inferring & visualizing. 

Week of April 29th

This week, we will continue to work on reading annotation strategies through book groups.  We will work on specific strategies, such as making connections, inferring, and identifying different types of figurative language. 

Week of April 22nd

This week, we will be starting book groups! Students will choose from one of the following titles:
 
Tuck Everlasting
Gregor the Overlander
Hoot
A Wrinkle in Time
The Tale of Despereaux
 
As students begin reading, we will work on comprehension techniques, such as character analysis & setting.  We will also continue to read and analyze the story All Summer in a Day.  There will be a quiz on the story on Friday.

Week of April 15th

This week, students will construct and finalize their persuasive poster.  In addition, students will be reading & analyzing the story All Summer in a Day

Week of 4/8/19

Due to testing, we will have limited time in literacy this week.  We will work on making final edits/revisions to our persuasive writing as well as beginning to build elements of our persuasive poster.  

Week of 3/18/19

Due to testing, we will have limited time in literacy this week.  We will work on making final edits/revisions to our persuasive writing as well as rereading and annotating the short story The Coming of the Surfman.

Week of 3/11

This week, we will be working on publishing our persuasive writing.  Students will write captions to go along with pictures, as well as design & create and illustration & motto for their topic.  

Week of March 4th

This week, we will continue to revise & edit our rough drafts.  We will focus on substituting word choice, and making edits with capitalization, usage, punctuation, & spellings (CUPS).  We will also begin reading and discussing the story called The Coming of the Surfman.

Week of 2/25/19

This week, we will continue to revise our persuasive drafts, which includes sentence structure.  Students will also write their 2nd writing prompt which will focus on analyzing characters from two stories from our Junior Great Books.  There will also be a quiz on Friday on the story we have been reading entitled The Invisible Child.

Week of 2/19/19

This week, we will finish drafting our persuasive writing.  We will use paraphrasing to draft our conclusions.  We will then begin revising for sentence structure.  This includes run-on sentences & fragments.  In addition, we will begin reading and discussing the story The Invisible Child.

Week of 2/11/19

This week, we will continue drafting our rough drafts of our persuasive writing.  Students will use facts and quotes from the articles they have read to explain each "side".  We will also continue to discuss the story Learning the Game. We will have a quiz on the story on Thursday.

Week of February 4th

This week, we will organize and begin drafting our persuasive writing.  Students will incorporate facts from their articles in order to organize & draft.  In addition, we will read and annotate the story Learning the Game
