Week of January 28th

This week, students will begin reading to research their persuasive essay topic.  They will collect 'fact fragments' as they read so they can use these facts in their writing.  We will also continue discussing In the Time of the Drums and have a quiz on the story on Friday. 

Week of January 22nd

This week, we will continue discussing & analyzing the story In the Time of the Drums. We will also begin brainstorming and choosing topics for our persuasive writing piece.  Students will begin finding resources on their topic. 

Week of January 14th

Welcome back!  This week, we will be working on a writing prompt that compares & contrasts characters from our reading with Jr. Great Books.  Students will also analyze their writing.  In addition, we will be reading & discussing a story called In the Time of the Drums.

Week of 12/17

This week, we will finish reading Holes and watch the movie based off of the book.  Students will compare/contrast the book to the movie, as well as critique both via writing & classroom discussion.

Week of 12/10

This week, students will continue making their presentations on their expository topic.  We will also continue to discuss The Peddler's Gift.  We will have a quiz on the story this week as well.  Students will present their projects on Thursday & Friday in front of the class. 

Week of 12/3

This week, students will self-assess their expository piece.  We will then publish and begin preparing presentations on the computer.  We will also continue analyzing the story The Peddler's Gift.

Week of November 26th

This week, we will work on peer revising & editing our expository writing pieces.  We will also read and discuss the short story entitled The Peddler's Gift.

Week of 11/13

This week, we will finish drafting our expository writing pieces.  Students will begin revision by adding direct quotes from their articles.  We will also have a quiz on the story The Special Powers of Blossum Culp.

Week of November 5th

This week, we will begin drafting our rough drafts of our expository writing pieces.  We will also read and discuss the story The Special Powers of Blossum Culp. As your child about what they are reading & writing!

Week of 10/29

This week, we will begin research on a topic for expository writing based on students' choices.  We will also use shared inquiry in small groups to discuss a story called Charles.

Week of 10/22

This week, students will illustrate and present (in small groups) their Slice of Life.  We will also begin our next unit of using research to write an expository piece.

Week of 10/15

This week, students will be finishing up their rough drafts of their personal narratives.  They will self-assess using a rubric, and make appropriate changes.  We will begin publishing by the end of the week. 

Week of 9/24

This week, we will be revising our rough drafts of our personal narratives.  We will focus on word choice & sentence structure.  

Week of 9/17

This week, we will finish our rough drafts of our Slice of Life.  We will work on revising techniques, as well as the reading strategy 'inferring'.

This week, we will continue close reading strategies & annotations such as inferring and making connections.  We will also brainstorm ideas for our personal narrative, A Slice of Life.
