Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies 4/29/19-5/3/19

In the upcoming week of April 29th, students will be studying physical characteristics of different regions. We will also be checking in each day to practice reciting their home addresses and phone numbers. Please help your child locate their address and practice remembering it!

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies 4/22/19-4/26/19

In the upcoming week of the 22nd, students will work on the concept of where we are on the map. Ex: Thornton is in Colorado, Colorado is in the U.S., the U.S. is in North America, etc. This is also a great opportunity to help your student remember their address!

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 4/15-4/19

In the upcoming week, students will explore the elements of a map and demonstrate an understanding of the cardinal directions. Ask your child if they can name of the 7 continents (we learned a song this week to remember them).

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies Week of 4/8/19-4/12/19

Hello Westgate Families,
When we return from break students will rotate to their new social studies or science class. The students I just finished up with will go to science and vice versa.
We will begin our last session of social studies with maps and globes. Students will focus on the features of a map as well as the cardinal directions.

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 2/15/19-2/22/19

Hello Westgate Families,
This week in social studies the class presented their business pitches to their peers! It was incredible to see all the creative and innovative ideas.

This was the last week of social studies A for the quarter. Next week this group of students will switch to science for the remainder of the quarter.

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 2/8/19-2/14/19

Hello Westgate Families!
This week in social studies they did a short budget project about saving and spending. We had some great discussions about why saving is so important! We then moved on and they created business plans for a business they would like to start. They had to come up with a name, logo, decide if it was a want or a need, what it produced and consumed, and what reasonable prices would be. Next week they will present in large groups!

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 2/1/19-2/8/19

Hello Westgate Families,
This week in socials studies we focused on saving and spending money which incorporated needs verse wants. They took a quiz on the terms we have been learning about in the marketplace, it should be in their Friday folders.

We are beginning to talk about what a budget is and why they are necessary. This will lead us into our project where they get to create a business that requires a budget! (Kind of like a mini Shark Tank)

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 1/25/19-2/1/19

Hello Westgate Families,

This was a short week due to MLK Day and Junior Achievement Day, but we jumped right into comparing producers and consumers in the market. They are currently working a flip book to keep track of the terms we are learning in this unit (goods, services, producer, consumer, needs and wants). Next week we will start on the needs versus wants section. This is a great opportunity to distinguish things at home that they NEED and things they just WANT.

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 1/18/19-1/25/19

Hello Westgate Families!
This week in social studies we had lots of great class discussion analyzing different jobs in our community. They shared jobs people in their family have as well as jobs they have seen people doing in the community. This led us to differentiating between jobs that provide goods and jobs that provide services and what their purpose is. Next week we will begin looking at what consumers and producers are and what their role is.

This is a great opportunity to share with your student what your career is or has been as well as ask them what jobs they are interested in. Do they want to provide a good or a service?

Mrs. Hackleman's Social Studies A 1/14/19-1/18/19

Hello Westgate Families,
Welcome back from winter break! This week in social studies we are beginning our unit on jobs and leaders in our families and communities. This is a great time to share what it is you do with your student and explain your impact on the community! We will be studying the importance of jobs around the community and the role of community leaders.

Kowalski's Social Studies 12/10/2018

Hello Westgate Families,

This week in social studies we talked about how traditions can be different and looked at how people celebrate differently. We started a small project comparing how Christmas is celebrated around the world. You may find a paper labeled “Family Celebrations” in your students Friday folder this week that is marked to be completed. If so, you can encourage your student to ask members of your family or friends to help them fill it out.

Next week we will continue to compare celebrations around the world and move into our culture unit!

Ms. Kowalski's Social Studies 11/16/18-11/30/18

Hello Westgate Families,
This was a short but sweet week in social studies. We jumped right into traditions, using Thanksgiving as our main example. We looked at the history of Thanksgiving and why it is a celebrated holiday. After break we will go into our past, present and future mini unit!

Ms. Kowalski's Social Studies 11/8/2018

Hello Westgate Families!
This week in social studies we compared different cultures. Specifically, we compared and contrasted Mexico and the US looking at food, language, and celebrations.
This Tuesday, November 13th will be the last day of social studies for this class before they switch to science for the remaining of the quarter.

Ms. Kowalski's Social Studies 11/2/18

Hello Westgate Families,
This week in social studies we studied what culture is, and how it makes people unique and special. It was a shortened week, but we focused on our personal cultural with discussions about how clothes, food, family, traditions and language make up a specific group of people. Next week we will begin to compare different cultures around the world.
If your student has a worksheet in their backpack today called "What are Your Family Traditions?", please encourage them to work on it and bring it back Monday. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about themselves and their culture!
