Wednesday, October 31stCarnival/Class Parties

Pod Parent: We are in need of a Pod Parent that can help organize class parties using the Sign-Up Genius.  If you would be willing to take this on, please contact [email protected].  We have a signup genius already built, it just needs to be adjusted to meet the needs of the party.

Halloween:

Halloween K-4 Carnival

It is a Westgate tradition that each year the 5/6 Team hosts a Halloween Carnival for the K-4 students.  This year the carnival will be from 1:30 – 2:30 PM.

  • This is a student-only event.

Halloween Class Parties 2:30 – 3:15PM

Sign up for Halloween Party!

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4DAEAA2AA7FA7-halloween

These are student parties, not family parties.

  • Please do not come to school for the party unless you are a volunteer with a background check through the school.  All volunteers must be approved by the Teams.
  • No young children may accompany volunteers for Team Parties
  • All food and drink donations for the festivities can be left at the front desk or brought into school by the students in the morning.

Halloween Costume Expectations

Costume expectations for all students:

No Masks

No Full Face Paint (except what a student can apply themselves in the time they have to get ready before class parties).  Face paint may not be worn to school.

No Weapons or anything that can be used as a weapon

No inappropriate or offensive costumes

1st – 8th Grades - May NOT WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL.  All students will be given time to change into their Halloween costumes.  Students will be in classes during the morning.

Advocacy Theme for October:  October is Bully Prevention Month, we will be doing a variety of activities to empower students to advocate for themselves against bullies.  We will also discuss the differences between being mean and being a bully.

Definition: For a student’s behavior to be considered bullying, it must involve (1) an intent by the perpetrator to cause physical or psychological harm to the victim, (2) a power imbalance between the victim and the perpetrator, and (3) repeated negative acts.

Qtr. 2 Club Sign Ups:  Club sign up fair will take place Monday after school in the front lobby.  This will be a great place to pick up permission slips and also find out about all the cool clubs being offered this quarter!   This information is also available at westgateschool.org  under the academics tab.

Scooters:  Your child is welcome to bring their scooters to school as long as they have a helmet.  If your child chooses to bring their scooters, their scooter needs to remain at school until Friday.  Scooters cannot be taken home daily.  It causes a lot of delays/issues during carline trying to load them.

Toy/Electronic Policy:  Students are welcome to bring an appropriate toy for use at recess ONLY.  This item should fit in their backpacks and will not be allowed in class.  Electronics, such as a Gameboy or tablets, should not be coming to school.   Finally, there is no trading, buying, and/or selling of cards or other items at school.

MAPS Reports:

In the past, we have used a report that gives you basic information about how your students performed but didn’t provide you with tangible information to understand areas that they excelled or struggled in. This year you will receive a much more comprehensive report. Reports will be sent out on Monday, September 10th after 4pm. If you have questions about your child’s report please contact your child’s advocacy teacher.

Student Count Window:

From September 12th to September 26th attendance is especially important as the district will be doing their yearly student count. This is important to the school and is how the state determines school funding based on student attendance. Here is the link for additional information.

Curriculum Night 2018

Hello Families!
I hope you had an insightful curriculum night last night. It was lovely to meet those of you who made it! If you were unable to attend or if you have some lingering questions, I have posted the presentation so for your reference. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me! Have a great weekend!

Literacy and Math Placements 2018 Update

Literacy and Math Placements:

On Friday, we switched for math and literacy classes.  Your child’s placements are in their Friday Folders.  Please check them.  If you don’t see anything in there, email your child’s advocacy teacher so they can give you that information.  Curriculum Night will be this coming Thursday evening from 7:00-8:00 PM.  This is a great way to learn more about the curriculum your child will be learning this year.

Behavior Screener:

Parents, please complete the behavior screener that was emailed to you this afternoon.  If you have not received a link, please email your advocacy teacher.

Field Trip September 6th:

On September 6th 1-2 will be going to Four Mile Historic Park for a “Pioneer Sampler” field trip. Students will get to learn about pioneer celebrations and games, do some farm chores, and see what school was like in pioneer days. We hope students can compare their lives now with how life used to be. We will leave Westgate at 9:15 and arrive back at 1:15. Students will need good walking shoes and a sack lunch. If you can volunteer for this field trip please indicate that on the permission slip and make sure you have your background check complete.

Snacks: We are going to add a second snack in the afternoon.  You aren’t required to send two snacks, but if your child would like to have a snack in the afternoon, we will have it at 2:00.  Please make sure you are providing a healthy snack for your child.

Picture Day is NEXT FRIDAY!  Picture forms went home in Friday folders.  If you wish to order photos on Friday, please send money in the envelope provided or you can place your order online.

Curriculum Night:  Curriculum Night is Thursday, August 30th from 7:00-8:00 PM in the 1-2 Pod.  This is a great night to learn more information about the literacy and math classes that your child is placed in.  Teachers will go over the curriculum and standards they will be covering this year.  Students will be placed in their math and literacy classes before Curriculum Night.  This is an adult only event, children should not be in attendance so you are able to give your full attention.

No School:  August 31st and September 3rd there will be no school!  Enjoy your break!

Fun Run will be held on Saturday, September 8th.    There will also be an obstacle course for the younger children.

Car Line:  Thank you for your patience during car line.  Please, please remember to stay in your car so that traffic continues to flow.  We will help your child get into the car.  Parents, please do not pull your child out of the line when they are walking to their pick up spot.  Students will only be released by their teacher by the fence.

Labeling/Lost and Found:  Please LABEL everything that your child brings with them to school so if they misplace it, it can easily be returned to them or found in lost and found.

Chick Fil A Night:  Chick Fil A spirit night will be Thursday, August 16th.

Speaker Linda Silverman:  Monday, August 20th from 6:00- 8:00 PM.  Please come to hear a fabulous speaker talk about Gifted Development.  The event is free and childcare will be provided at no cost.
