This week, we are beginning Lesson 7: Subtract Two-Digit Numbers. Students will learn different strategies for subtracting two-digit numbers, including adding up to find the difference and subtracting in parts to make a ten. Students will use models and number lines to help solve problems and explain their thinking.

We are finishing Lesson 6: Add Two-Digit Numbers. Students have been learning several strategies for adding two-digit numbers, including using base-ten models, breaking numbers apart into tens and ones, and making the next ten to make addition easier.

In class, students are learning how picture graphs and bar graphs can be used to organize and show data. They will practice reading graphs, comparing information, and using the data to answer questions.

The family letter includes examples of both types of graphs and a simple at-home activity using coins to create a picture graph and a bar graph. I encourage you to review the letter and try the activity with your child to reinforce what we are learning in class.

In class, students are learning different ways to solve one-step addition and subtraction word problems. Students will use strategies such as identifying what they know and what they need to find, drawing bar models, using number bonds, and writing related fact-family equations.
