October 24- Picture Retakes, Original Works, Halloween

Hello Muftic Advocacy,
 
We had a great day signing pledges against bullying.  Then, the students each tied an orange ribbon onto the fence as symbol of their pledge:
 
I will speak out against bullying, report bullying when I see it happen, Learn what is and is not bullying, Make others feel included and valued, SOlve problems in peaceful ways, think before I comment on, post , orforwar messages. I know I don't deserve to be bullied. I agree and take this anti-bullying pledge.
 
I hope you were able to see it during driveline today.  In addition, we have been working on curriculum designed by our amazing counselling team and really digging in to what bullying looks and feels like.  In addition, we are discussing how being a bystander is also a form of bullying.  We all need to be vigilant.  I am encouraging students to speak up and tell an adult.  I hope you are also having rich discussions at home about what to do to help prevent bullying.

HALLOWEEN
Attached is a signup sheet for the 5/6 student's Halloween party on Friday, October 30 which will take place on Friday, October 30 from 1:15 to 2:15. 
 
During the party we will have a selection of games and puzzles to enjoy.  Students will change into their costumes starting at 12:45. 
 
Costume Guidelines:
  • No Masks or face coverings
  • No Full-Face Paint (partial face paint is allowed if a student can apply it themselves in the time they have to get ready before class parties).  Face paint may not be worn to school.
  • No Weapons or anything that can be used as a weapon
  • No inappropriate or offensive costumes – all body parts must be covered
  • Students K-8 may NOT WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL.  Students can bring their costumes, and they should stay in their backpacks until they change at 12:45 prior to the parties. Students will be in regular classes during the morning.

September 2026

This month came in like a hurricane. The outdoor ed/indoor ed events really got us all better acquainted.  With Spirit Week this week, we are all feeling the Westgate Wild.  With cooler fall days coming, I hope we all are settled into our school year routines.
 
With Advocacy, we have been exploring how to be a good group member and partner in collaborative work. We discussed the characteristics of what makes a good group member.  In addition, students got to meet Opal our corn snake last week.  Opal slithered into out hearts and some of our hands. It was wonderful to see the students hold her and become better acquainted with this animal.  
 
DON'T FORGET, on Wednesdays, we go outside for Nourish in Nature.  Students who do not get school lunch, need to pack a cold sack lunch as there is no microwave outside in the ampitheatre where we eat.
 
By now you should have received an email reminding us to take care of our Ms. Lounsbury by not having nuts or coconut food and cosmetic products in the pod.  Because all fifth graders come into contact with her, please be extra aware of leaving nuts (especially Nutella) and coconut products to enjoy at home.  We love our Ms. Lounsbury and want to keep her safe - she has a life threatening nut allergy.
 
WATER BOTTLES: Student should have a water bottle to drink water from.  Make sure your student's name is on the bottle so if it goes missing, it can be returned.

Outdoor Ed Lost and Found

Hello families of students who attended  Outdoor Ed at Keystone Science School!  We had an amazing experience watching your children grow these past few days. The setting and programming was excellent. I am sure your science campers are exhausted. We collected items as we left that did not make into bags. Please encourage your camper to check out the table in the pod to look for any items. Hoping tomorrow the items will all make it home.
It was such an honor to accompany your child to the Keystone Science School! Your children are wonderful and I hope they share all of their memories with you!

Welcome to Ms. Muftic's 5/6 Advocacy!

 

I hope that your child is enjoying and learning new things at Westgate. 
 
During Advocacy we will continue learning about the expectations of R.I.S.E. at Westgate.  We have had some great discussion about Respect and Integrity so far.  
 
Below are some reminders about upcoming dates:
Wednesday, 8-26
- Parent Engagement Night 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
 
Monday, 8-31 - Wednesday, 9-2
- Outdoor Education (see email from Ms. V)
- If you aren't attending Outdoor Education, students will come during regular school hours, and we will do indoor education with those students)
 
Friday, 9-4
- Fun Run in the morning
- Half a day for students with Carline starting at 11:30
 
Monday, 9-7
- No School due to Labor Day
 
Friday, 9-11
- Individual school pictures

Every year, our school community comes together for one of the most energetic and inspiring events of the season—our annual Fun Run! This lively tradition fuels our Specials programs—P.E., Music, Art, and iLab—by raising funds that empower teachers to bring unique and essential resources into their classrooms. 
 
This year the fun run to support iLab will be on September 4th! 
 
We provide race bibs for each of the students on the day of the race where we mark their laps. This year I think I will provide each class with stickers of our race logo to send home with each student on the day of the race to make things easier and then students don't have to worry if they lose their race bibs (last year we put stickers on the bibs). 
 
We encourage students to ask family members and friends to donate to their run for them to earn prizes. By pledging flat-rate donations, family and friends can help students unlock support-level prizes knowing their donations help these classes and teachers. The flyers show the prize levels students can earn, and information will be going out in the newsletter and can be found on our website: WESTGATE COMMUNITY SCHOOL FUN RUN.  We will also be sending out reminder emails throughout the month. 
 
Students and parents are also able to purchase a race day t-shirt for a limited time in our Spirit Store: Westgate Community School | Spreadshop

Welcome to 2026-27

Dear 5/6 Community,
 
Welcome to the 2026-27 school year. I will be interacting with all of the 5/6 students this year.  The classes I will be teaching are ADVOCACY, one section each of 5th grade MATH, and ELA, and both sections of 5th grade SOCIAL STUDIES.
 
I am a Denver born third-generation Coloradoan who has connections to Denver and Fraser. With more than 30 years in a classroom abroad and in the metro area, I come to Westgate to be a part of this creative and loving community. This is my second year. Educated in both traditional and Montessori education, I bring experience in Whole Child philosophy which was coined by Dr.Montessori more than 100 years ago.
 
My favorite things to do are spend time with my family and celebrate the accomplishments of my three adult children. Of course, my family includes fur babies, as well.  I love both kinds of football and if I am not cheering for the Broncos, I am cheering for the Croatian National Football Team. This summer I watched ALL the FIFA matches and love to talk all things Football (Soccer)
