Grateful for YOU!

Dear Families!

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to help guide your children through this important phase of their lives.  Each one of your children brings a special gift to share with our community.  I am so grateful for landing at Westgate Community School. As I reflect on all that I am grateful for this season, I always think of those who do not find themselves in a warm embrace surrounded by friends and family with a delicious bounty of food to share.  I hope that each of you feels valued and loved this holiday season.  I can't wait to see your students back at school in a week to continue all the amazing learning we have been doing. There is so much gratitude to share.  If things are rough for you right now, please know that I care deeply and would love to help if you need it. Blessings to all.

Happy Thank-ful Celebration,
Ms. Tanya Muftic

Exploring the Wild West Module 4, Week 2

This week in ELA, we are continuing to work on Module 4 which isvcentered on the Wild West. Our big guiding question is:
What character traits were needed in the people who settled the West?
Students will explore this through rich texts, vocabulary study, and informational writing.

🌵 Vocabulary Development
We will work with several important content words—including employed, celestial, sacrifice, complaint, homestead, primary, domain, residence, and ideology. Students will continue developing strong word-learning strategies by studying homophones and homographs, as well as working with prefixes (trans-), suffixes (-ous, -ious), and the Latin root circum-.

📚 Reading Skills
Our reading focus this week includes:

  • Monitoring comprehension and clarifying when the meaning breaks down
  • Identifying the central idea of informational texts
  • Analyzing text structure to understand how authors organize information
  • Examining media techniques in images, videos, and graphics that accompany our readings

🔤 Foundational Skills
Students will review the VCCCV syllable-division pattern to support decoding long or unfamiliar words. Spelling practice will reinforce this pattern, and fluency lessons will focus on accuracy and self-correction.

đź’¬ Communication & Media Literacy
We will practice interpreting and analyzing different types of media, making connections between texts, visuals, and historical information about the West.

✏️ Writing Workshop
In Writing Workshop, students will begin an informational writing piece in the form of a letter. They will learn how to clearly share information, support their ideas with evidence, and write with purpose for a specific audience.

It’s going to be an engaging week full of history, literacy, and creativity as we explore the lives and character traits of the people who shaped the Wild West!

Week of November 10

In ELA, we are developing paragraphs as students continue their PEMDAS Pal project by writing about their creations. ✏️ Integrating math and language arts makes learning more engaging and meaningful. Students will describe the Order of Operations while also exploring creative writing techniques to bring their math-inspired characters to life.

In our HMH Journeys books, we are beginning Module 4. In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that introduce them to the people who settled the American West. Our genre focus on informational text helps students identify central ideas, analyze text structure, and recognize author’s craft techniques to better understand unfamiliar topics.

Students will also read personal historical fiction to build connections across genres. As they expand their vocabulary and synthesize new information, they will gain insight into the diverse experiences of early settlers and deepen their understanding of this important period in American history.

Week of November 3

Students are finishing their unit on Natural Disasters while continuing to refine their paragraph writing skills. We are focusing on what makes an effective paragraph and how to construct strong topic sentences and supporting details.

In grammar, we’re building on our work with compound and complex sentence structures—helping students express their ideas with clarity and sophistication.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions!
Have a lovely week. 🌿
