September 29 - October 2

September 22-26

In Math this week we will be finish working with Chapter 2, Fractions and Decimals. We are multiplying and dividing fractions, adding, subtracting, and dividing decimals.  If you have real life problems with any of these math skills, quiz your child and have them complete the problem.

September 15-19

This week we will continue to dive into Chapter 2, fractions and decimals.
The students will learn to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.  If you are using a recipe, have your child make equivalent fractions by doubling the ingredients.

Mrs. Cundari will again be coming in on Thursday to do Thinking Classroom.  I love seeing the students work together and have conversations about math skills and share their thinking on how they got to their answer.

September 8-12

This week in math we will be focusing on Chapter 2 vocabulary words and then work on multiplying and dividing fractions.  Chapter 2 is packed with many skills.  If you are looking for something for your child to work on have your child, get onto Skills Trainer on Big Ideas.

Once again on Thursday Mrs. Cundari will be coming in for Math workshop.  It has been amazing to see how the students collaboration is occurring while thinking about a specific math concept and then explaining their thinking.

September 2-5

Some small groups in math have completed the Chapter 1 math skills, Numerical Expressions and factors, and are moving on to Chapter 2, Fractions and Decimals.  Students are all able to log into Big Ideas and they can practice using skills trainer.  If you need help what the username is for your child, please reach out to me.

Thursday, Mrs. Cundari will come into work on another Math workshop.  Ask your child what the banner questions was from last week.

August 25-29

On Thursday Mrs. Cundari will come into to class to start our first Math Workshop experience.

August 18-22

Last week we started diving into Chapter 1, numerical expressions and factors.

The small groups are moving and the students will be learning about the following math skills:
- Order of Operations
- Prime Factorization
- Greatest Common Factor
- Least Common Multiple

Last Thursday, Mrs. Cundari came in and practiced with the students the process of what math workshop will look like.  The students did amazing following directions!  This week we will dive into a math skill using math workshop model on Thursday.

Have an amazing week!

August 11-15

This week we will begin Chapter 1 in the Big Ideas 6th grade curriculum.
Monday we will start by creating a prime/composite and perfect square math tool sheet. We will also look at specific vocabulary words for the Chapter 1, Numerical Expressions and factors.

The students will take a pretest for Chapter 1 content.  I will then grade the pretest and the math skills that they haven't learned yet will be the lessons that they will be taught. Students will then be placed in a small group based on the skills that they need to learn.  On Friday, the students will be taking the MAPS math assessment to see where their math skills are at this point.  I use this data to help form small groups and work on math skills that may be missing.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

August 4 - 8

Hello everyone!

Welcome to 6th grade Big Ideas Math!

I am thrilled to be adding some new teaching strategies this year.
The first week of school the students will be taking the Pre-Course Assessment from the Big Ideas curriculum.  This will give me great information of what each student already knows about the 6th grade math skills.

Throughout the course of the year, your child will take a pretest for each Chapter so that I know what they already have learned, and they will be taught the new math skills that they haven't learned yet.

Every Monday, the students will be introduced the skill and write vocabulary cards with definitions and examples to refer back to any time that they may need.

On Thursday each week, Mrs. Cundari will be coming in to do a Math Workshop model that encourages students to dig deeper into their math understanding.  We will be starting with the end of the math book skills so that students can have an understanding of all the math skills for 6th grade.
