Week of 2/2

This week in math we’ll be reviewing Chapter 10 ahead of our Chapter 10 test on Wednesday. After the test we’ll begin Chapter 11, continuing our work with fractions.

Also — each Friday will be a Math Review Day: students will practice previously learned skills and get brief previews of upcoming topics so they have exposure before we study them in depth.

Week of 1/26

This week in math we will:

  • Write fractions as whole numbers and understand mixed-number representations.
  • Place and compare fractions on a number line, including fractions less than a whole and improper fractions greater than a whole.
  • Practice converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers and locating both on a number line.

Coming up:

  • Next week students will take the Chapter 10 test on fractions.
  • After the test we will begin Chapter 11 and continue building fraction skills.

How you can help at home:

  • Ask your child to show fractions on a number line (including mixed numbers).
  • Practice converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers with real-life examples (e.g., cutting snacks).

Week of 1/12

ello families — this week in math we will:

  • Begin Chapter 9: Multiplying multiples of 10

    • Example strategy: if your child knows 3×5=15,  they will use that to solve 30×5=150 by understanding place value and how tens numbers can be solved by knowing simple multiplication problems.
  • Practice multi‑step word problems that require both multiplication and division to solve.

  • Prepare for the Chapter 9 test next week on Tuesday.

  • Start the fractions chapter after the test.

Week of 12/15

  • Monday: We’ll work on word problems in class. I’ll send home an optional review sheet — it’s not required, but I highly recommend students complete it to prepare for the Chapter 8 test on Tuesday.
  • Tuesday: Chapter 8 test.
  • Wednesday: Students will work in groups to create their own addition word problems.
  • Thursday: Students will do the same activity but with subtraction word problems.
  • Friday: Fun holiday-themed math activities in class. I’ll also send home a review packet for the break so students can keep practicing.

At-home suggestion: Give your child one math problem each night to keep their skills sharp over the week and during the break.

Week of 11/11

This week in math:

  • We’re learning rounding using number lines and place value.
  • We’ll practice estimating sums and differences.

At home you can help by:

  • Practicing all math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Reviewing rounding with quick number-line or place-value questions (e.g., “Round 47 to the nearest ten”).

Week of 11/3

In math this week, we are learning how to find the area of different shapes. On Tuesday, we will have a review session to prepare for the Chapter 6 test, which will take place on Wednesday. Then on Thursday, we will begin our new chapter starting with place value and moving on to rounding numbers.

Week of 10/27

This week in Math, students will be taking the Chapter 5 test on Tuesday. A review sheet will be sent home to help your child practice and prepare. After the test, we will begin our new unit on Area, where students will learn to understand area, measure it using standard units, and find area by multiplying. To add some seasonal fun, we will be doing Halloween-themed math activities on Friday.

Week of 10/20

We are starting Chapter 5, focusing on patterns and fluency with the multiplication table. Students will identify patterns, use the multiplication table, complete a multiplication chart, and practice problem solving.

How You Can Support at Home

Help your child build speed and confidence by practicing their fast facts in addition, subtraction, and multiplication regularly. Quick recall of these facts will make math easier and more enjoyable for them.

Week of 9/29

This week, we are working on division facts for the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, and 1, as well as solving division word problems to strengthen problem-solving skills. Please note that our Chapter 4 test will be on Thursday. Encouraging your child to practice division facts at home will help them feel confident for the test.

Week of 9/15

This week in math, we have a busy schedule! On Monday, we have our field trip. We’ll spend time reviewing Chapter 3 and then take the Chapter 3 test on Wednesday. After the test, students will take a pre-test for Chapter 4. This pre-test may feel challenging since we haven’t learned the new material yet. It would be great if you could talk at home about resilience and the importance of trying our best, even when something feels tricky.

Finally, on Friday, we’ll begin our new chapter on division!

At home, you can work on multiplication and any fast facts :)

We are continuing our work on multiplication this week, focusing on the 7, 8, and 9 times tables. Students will also be practicing the strategies we've learned so far to build their confidence and speed.

Next week, we will have our Chapter 3 test on multiplication, so this week’s practice is especially important.

To make practice fun at home, try playing Multiplication Tic Tac Toe! Attached is a game board you can either print or recreate on paper. It’s a great way to reinforce multiplication skills while enjoying some family game time.

What are we doing this week?

This week in math, we are starting Chapter 3 and focusing on multiplying by 3’s, 4’s, and 6’s. On Friday, since I will be away, the class will have a review of multiplication skills with a substitute teacher.

At home, you can support your child by practicing math facts in addition, subtraction, and multiplication. There are plenty of things you can do to make it more fun, please email me if you need any help with resources!
