Week of 9.29

This week, our students will have the exciting opportunity to meet the chicks! Please note that Thursday is a half day, and there will be no school on Friday due to conferences all day.

Rocket Math

This year in 3rd and 4th grades, we will be working hard to build math fact fluency.  Our goal is to help students master these basics so they can be more comfortable applying their computational skills to more difficult and/or multi-step problems.  This is in alignment with our school’s universal goals to improve our math instruction and performance.
We will use a system called Rocket Math that includes two parts: oral partner practice and timed written practice.  Students will be working at their own pace through the various levels.  Their starting point is determined by a placement test, and their written goal is determined after testing their writing speed.  This whole process happens in just fifteen minutes daily.
There are no grades or punishments associated with our fluency practice, but the class will be working toward goals as a group and celebrating their success together.  Every time any student in the class passes to the next set of facts, they will add a star to the rocket. When the rocket is full, the whole class will get to participate in the celebration they agree upon with their teacher.  This might be something like a class pajama day or a day to play math games during fluency practice.  Students may also earn stars in other, top secret, ways determined by their teachers.
Students who are struggling to advance through the different levels will receive small group intervention instruction with Mrs. Cundari during fluency to build their conceptual understanding before returning to the Rocket Math practice with the class.  These students will have alternative ways to earn stars for the class rocket and will continue to participate in all class celebrations.

Week of 8/18

This week, we will be doing MAPS testing to help us understand your child’s progress in school. MAPS (Measures of Academic Progress) is a computer-based assessment that adjusts to each student’s level and measures their skills in Literacy on Tuesday and Math on Wednesday. The results help us tailor instruction to meet your child’s individual learning needs.

Welcome Back

About Ms. Papiernik

I am a very fun and relaxing teacher; I love the joy that the students bring into the classroom.  I do have several food allergies that need to be mentioned, this does not mean your child cannot bring these foods the just must be extra careful when eating them. If they do bring something I am allergic too they will just need to clean up their tables when they are done and make sure the food is not on the ground. All allergies are if ingested except one which I will let you know.

Favorite book: any Roald Dahl
Favorite drink: Dr. Pepper or coffee
Favorite snack: Hershey's Cookies and Cream or salt and vinegar chips

Food Allergies: Pistachio, tree nuts, almonds, pecans, sunflower seeds, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, pine nuts, hazelnut, bananas, and walnuts ( this one I have discovered recently is slightly airborne).
We also have a student this year who has an airborne WALNUT allergy, please refrain from packing walnuts. If your student does have walnuts in a trail mix or in anything they will have to eat in a different room.

REMINDER: We also have lock box for electronics in the ¾ POD, any student with a phone, smart watch, air tag, or any electronic device not approved to be had by the principal will need to put it in the lock box in the morning when they enter the classroom. Students will be given the item as they are leaving, if you would like more information on this policy, it is in the handbook or feel free to reach out to Mrs. Lubang or Mrs. Seybold with any questions, comments, or concerns. I am looking forward to an amazing school year!
