This week, we have a special guest coming in on Monday to talk to complete our mini-unit on financial literacy. Students will learn how to fill out tax forms!
Then, we will continue our unit on money and measurement.
We had a special speaker come in and talk to our math class about financial literacy and taxes!
This week, we will continue to learn about measurement, money, mass, capacity, and weight. Students will also get the opportunity to learn about financial literacy through a program called Legends of Learning. If you would like to learn more about this, let me know and I will send you the links.
4/14-4/18
This week we will review what we learned last year about measurements (how to measure using a ruler, what units of measurement are, etc.). Then, we will learn about measurement equivalences. We will focus on length, mass, capacity, weight, and time throughout this unit.
4/7-4/11
On Tuesday-Thursday of this week students will be taking math CMAS. The rest of the time will be spent revisiting past topics before we go into measurement.
On Thursday, I sent your student home with a blue folder containing practice materials for math, reading, writing, and social studies. While this work is not required, I highly recommend it, as we will begin CMAS testing immediately after spring break. I have also attached the materials to this email in case the folder happens to disappear from their backpacks.
Below, you’ll find helpful websites for students to practice math and typing skills, as well as access to CMAS practice exams. In class, we have been working on using the tools provided in the test and navigating it effectively. We also discussed bookmarking writing sections to avoid surprises when they appear in the language arts test.
I understand that jumping into testing right after the break can feel daunting, but we are doing everything we can to create a positive and stress-free testing environment. themselves, that is all that matters. I've been reminding students that a single test does not define their abilities or who they are. What truly matters is that they put forth their best effort, showcase what they've learned, and believe in themselves. At home, please encourage your student to get a good night's sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast to set them up for success.
This week, we are focusing on CMAS preparation and review. Students will practice navigating the test, managing their time effectively, and recalling important information from memory.
At the end of the week, you will receive an email with resources and activities to help your student prepare over spring break. I will also be sending home optional practice work, which I highly recommend reviewing to ensure they are ready to dive into testing.
3/10-3/14
We are finishing our long unit on fractions this week. We will go over multiplication with fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers. Then, we will transition to relating fractions to decimals.
We will also start reviewing for CMAS, which is coming up in April.
3/3-3/5
This week we will work on multiplying fractions by mixed numbers (and simplifying) and mixed numbers by mixed numbers.
2/24-2/28
This week we will continue to learn how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
Students have all created accounts on Khan Academy. If you would like extra math practice at home, I recommend using their accounts (if your student does not remember their log-in information, please let me know and I can email it to you).
This week we will continue to learn about simplifying improper fractions to mixed numbers and multiplying fractions by whole numbers.
I have sent home a couple of tests recently, so please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
2/10-2/14
This week we will transition into learning about simplifying fractions (into smaller fractions and mixed numbers) and multiplying fractions by whole numbers and other fractions.
Some students will continue to learn about adding fractions and mixed numbers.
