Ms. Calder, Math, 6th Grade

Posts

April 29 - May 3

Based on each student's math level they are working at their pace on Chapter 7, Geometry, Chapter 8, Coordinate Planes and Integers.

To help support all 6th grade math skills the students work on Skill Builders in Big Ideas.  This is also available to students to access at home.

April 22-26

This week we will be having regular math classes, and we are continuing to work in our small groups based on the needs of each student.  We are working on Chapter 7, Geometry and Chapter 8, Integers, Number Lines, and the Coordinate Plane.

The 6th graders will take the math CMAS this week in the morning.

April 15-19

This week we will be having regular math classes, and we are continuing to work in our small groups based on the needs of each student.  We are working on Chapter 7, Geometry and Chapter 8, Integers, Number Lines, and the Coordinate Plane.

After viewing the Math MAP data from Friday I couldn't be prouder of how the students are learning 6th grade Math.

April 8 - 12

We will continue working through the Math curriculum: Chapter 6 Algebraic Expressions; Chapter 7, Area, Surface Area and Volume; and Chapter 8, Integers, Number Lines, and the Coordinate Plane.

On Wednesday with our schedule being so messed up because 5th graders will be taking the Science CMAS we will work on a math lesson looking at drawing translations, reflections and rotations.

Our math schedule will be a little different this week due to 5th graders taking the Science CMAS test.

Monday: regular schedule
Tuesday: Math will be from 2:15 to 3:15
Wednesday: 9:15 to 11:05
Thursday: regular Math class time
Friday: Math MAP test 9:15-10:45

March 18-22

My hope is to get everyone at the end of the Chapter that they are working on so that when we return from Spring Break, we can start fresh on the next Chapter.

If your child would like to practice extra skills, they can log into Big Ideas and go to Skill Builders to pick the math skill that they feel they need more practice with.  Last Wednesday, the students were to pick 5 different skills, so they are aware of how to navigate to the Skill Builders location.

March 11 - 15

We are continuing our progress of Math skills by working through the Units.
Each student is in a different place, some in Chapter 5, Algebraic Expressions; Chapter 6, Equations, and Chapter 7, Area, Surface Area and Volume.

March 4 -6

The individual groups are doing an amazing job of moving forward we are all in Chapter 6, Solving Equations and Chapter 7 Area, Surface Area and Volume.

Last Wednesday on No Worksheet Wednesday we spent some doing playing Hot Seat practicing the questions from the Chapter 1 - 5 Benchmark test to once again look at the skills that 6th graders should master before the end of the year.

February 26-March 1

We will continue working through Chapter 5, 6 and 7 depending on which group your child is in.

Chapter 5, Algebraic Expressions
Chapter 6, Equations
Chapter 7, Area, Surface Area and Volume.

On Tuesday the students will be taught by Mr. McGinnis as I will be with the 5th graders on a Field Trip.  The student's specific assignment will be assigned on Big Ideas.

February 20-23

Chapter 5, Algebraic Expressions
Chapter 6, Equations
Chapter 7, Geometry

Students will be working in the above chapters working at their own pace. Some students are taking the Benchmark test that assessing Chapters 1 - 5 to check for learning and giving me knowledge as to what I need to reteach on a No Worksheet Wednesday. The students are taking the Benchmark test on the computer which is also learning a new skill for them.

February 12 - 15

In math this week, the students will continue working at their pace through small group instruction, practice each lesson, and then seek clarification for better understanding.

The students are completing Chapter 5, Algebraic Expressions, moving into Chapter 6, Equations (putting into practice Chapter 5 learning, and some students are in Chapter 7, Area, Surface Area, and Volume.

February 5 - 9

We are all in Chapter 5 and 6 working on Algebra.
The students are making great progress in their math skills.
In between Chapter 5 and 6 the students are completing the second Benchmark test to show their learning of the first 5 chapters of the math book.  The students are taking this assessment on Big Ideas online.

For No Worksheet Wednesday, we will play Hot Seat game again to practice all operations that they have already learned.  We play last week, and the kids were all engaged and motived to show their knowledge.

January 29 - February 1

We are no in Chapter 4, Rates and Ratios, Chapter 5 Algebraic Expressions, and Chapter 6, Equations.

The students are all logged into Big Ideas website so they can practice math skills at home and work on lessons that they may have difficulties with.   If you have any questions about students logging in, please let me know.

We have done two weeks of Math Workshop on No Worksheet Wednesday and I am impressed with the thinking that the students are able to communicate about the math processes that they are using.

January 22 - 26

We are moving forward in Math still on Chapter 3 (Rates and Ratios), 4, (Percents) and 5 (Algebraic Expressions) math skills.

On Wednesday we will do our second round of Math Workshop where students will be given two different problems work independently and then partner with a peer to discuss their math thinking and be able to share with the class.

January 17-19

For No Worksheet Wednesday, we will start our Math Workshop using story problems to review Greatest Common Factors and Least Common Multiples. The students will have time to work out the problem, then collaborate with their peers and explain their thinking.

For the rest of the week, we will continue on the Chapter 4 and 5 lessons based on the skills that each student needs.

January 8 - 12

Happy New Year!

We are going to pick up where we left off before break where some students are finishing Chapter 3, rates and ratios and Chapter 4 Percents and decimals, and some students are starting Chapter 5 Algebraic Expressions through our small group instruction.

Wednesday will still be no Worksheet Wednesday, and after attending a Math Workshop conference before break I will implement that into instruction by digging deeper into communicating and solving math story problems.
