7th Science 5/15 - 5/19

Hello science families!

We are entering our last full week of classes! This week, we will be:
  • Finishing our A-Z science project where students will select one word that they learned about this school year for each letter of the alphabet. This is on Teams and is due on Wednesday (the 17th). We will spend some time in class this week working on it but students may need to spend time in academic success lab finishing it.
  • We will spend the rest of the week learning about evolution.
All missing work is due on Wednesday so please remind your student to check in with me to get any missing work completed! If it is not turned in, it will become a 1 in the gradebook. Please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

7th grade science 5/8-5/12

Hello 7th grade families!

After a couple of busy weeks, we finally have a normal week! This week in science, we will:
  • Look into natural selection
  • Popular genetics
  • Evolutionary patterns and processes
Reach out with questions and have a great week!

7th Grade Science 4/24 - 4/28

Hello 7th grade families!

After discussing this unit with my students, I decided to not have them take the cellular respiration quiz and in turn we are doing a project! We finished the unit by learning about energy flow through an ecosystem. With the project, each student is working with a partner and researching a specific ecosystem and creating a trophic pyramid. We started on Thursday, will finish Monday and have a gallery walk on Tuesday. We will also review this entire unit and have an assessment on Thursday. Friday students will have an introduction to our next unit, evolution.

Please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

7th Grade Science 4/17-4/21

Hello my wonderful 7th grade science families!

I have officially come back for the rest of the year from maternity leave! I was welcomed with so much love and so many hugs from your amazing students! I am gradually coming back so I appreciate your patience as I learn where our students are with everything as well as grades.

This week in class we will:
  • Learn about fermentation and how it relates to cellular respiration
  • Review cellular respiration and take a quiz
  • Attend the Global Clean up on Friday for Earth Week!
Please reach out with any questions and I am so excited to finish the school year strong with our students!!

7th Grade Science Update - 3/5/23

Hello 7th grade families!

Last week was a busy one, preparing for an upcoming quiz and reviewing a "Pedigree Practice" assignment that many students had questions on.  We finished last Friday with our Heredity unit test, which will be graded and passed back this week.

Also, even though a short week, we'll be starting off with our new unit on Energy.  We'll start off with an "Around the Room" activity where various terminology will be reviewed and/or introduced.  Then, we'll move into discussing that all living organisms need to obtain (and use) energy.  We'll discuss the main ways organisms obtain energy but will also pick up with this same information after spring break.

I look forward to meeting you at conferences.  Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Shandi Woodward

7th Grade Science Update - 2/27

Hello 7th grade families!

We're wrapping up our Heredity unit this week with a review of our Pedigree Practice assignment and tying loose ends on our Mutation & Genetics discussions.  Later this week, we'll have a unit test on Thursday (3/2).  Your student will be getting a study guide tomorrow.  Feel free to ask them about it!

Lastly, and if we have time, we'll be starting our new Energy unit, diving in with a introduction to Energy and then we'll be discussing photosynthesis.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Ms. Woodward

7th Grade Science Update - 2/21/23

Hello 7th grade Science families!

Welcome back after the long weekend!  I hope you enjoyed your time as much as I did mine.

This week we'll be finishing up our Heredity unit by discussing mutations and genetic disorders.  We'll have a day to review and study for our unit exam and then on Friday we'll be taking our unit test.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Have a great week!

7th Grade Science Update - 2/13

Hello 7th Grade Science Families!

Last week we ended our Friday learning about and researching The Blue Fugates of Troublesome Creek.  This week we'll take this information further and discuss pedigrees.  Why are they needed?  How do you read a pedigree?  And, how is this applicable to my life?

We are close to the end of this unit and will be preparing for a unit test next week.

A quick reminder: no school on Friday (2/17) and Monday (2/20).  Enjoy the long weekend!

Have a great week!

7th Grade Science Families

Hello 7th grade families!

This week we're continuing to learn about complex inheritances, including discussing incomplete dominance and codominance.  And, discussing various situations in how we see them in daily life.  We'll be moving on to learning about pedigrees later this week.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Best,
Shandi

7th Grade Science Update 1/30

Hello 7th grade Science families!

This week in science we'll be reviewing Mendelian Genetics in preparation for a quiz on Wednesday.  We'll then move to discussing complex inheritance and pedigrees.

Grades have been updated in IC.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week!

7th Grade Science Update 1/23/23

Hello 7th grade Science families!

Thank you for your patience as I step into Ms. Haworth's shoes.

For the month of January, we started a new unit on Heredity.  We've been investigating inheritance and who Gregor Mendel was.

We'll start this week off discussing Punnett squares.  Then we'll be moving onto learning about Mendel's laws in more detail, as well as talking about dihybrid crosses.

I look forward to this week and welcome any questions you may have!

Best,
Ms. Woodward

Mrs. Haworth out on maternity leave

Hello Westgate families!

I wanted to send a reminder that I will be out on maternity leave until mid-April. I welcomed my beautiful baby girl on December 22nd and could not be more in love! In the meantime, Shandi Woodward is my long term and will be updating Edlio. Please feel free to email her at [email protected] .

Have a great quarter 3!

7th grade science 12/5-12/9

Hello 7th grade science families!

We are quickly approaching the end of the quarter! This week, we will be:
  • Learning about chromosomal mutations
  • Reviewing for our unit assessment
  • Completing our unit assessment (Friday 12/9)
Please remind your student that all missing work is due end of the day Wednesday (12/7) for all classes! Work can be completed during Academic Lab and at home. All work for science can be made up at anytime, so please encourage them to reach out and ask for the missing assignments!

Have a great week and reach out with any questions!

Science 11/28 - 12/2

Hello 7th grade science families!

I hope you had a restful break! As we are finishing up the second quarter, we will be completing our unit on genetics! This week, we will:
  • Determine the difference between mitosis and meiosis
  • Learn the steps of meiosis
  • Take a quiz on meiosis
I was not able to update the gradebooks over break so I will be completing that over the course of the week. Students completed a quiz on mitosis on the Friday before break. They will have 2 weeks to retake the quiz to show competency if they received a score they did not want.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have!

Science 11/14 - 11/18

Hello 7th grade science families!

This week, we are continuing our genetics unit! We will:
  •  Learn about mitosis and cell division
  • Learn about cancer and its connection to mitosis
As always, please reach out with any questions! Have a great week!
