Posts

Jan. 23-27

Almost all of the students have completed the MobyMax placement test.  When the students finish, they will be given practice on the math topics that they need extra work on.

The students are almost finished with Chapter 3, rates/ and ratios and Chapter 4 Percents.   Both of these Chapters, the students have been able to grasp the math concepts.  I hope to finish with both of these Chapters by the end of the week with the students.

Jan. 17-20

Focus:
Chapter 3: Rates/Ratios
Chapter 4: Percentages; changing a percent into a fraction and decimal.

We are crushing through the Chapters.  We continue with small group learning and working at the math concepts that each student needs to learn.

Last week, the students were able to get into Mobymax and start the Placement test which will then give the students practice on the math topics that they are missing.  Mobymax will be used to keep the students always learning during math class while I work with each small group on the current math concepts.

Jan. 9-13

Happy New Year and welcome back!!!

For the week we will pick up where each group left off.  Some students are finishing Chapter 2 material and then will move into Chapter 3, rates and ratios.  Another group will be taking the pretest for Chapter 4, percentages which give me information of what they need to learn.

I will also be introducing Mobymax to help students practice skills in areas that they may be missing.  The login information is easier than Big Ideas and gives another support system for the kiddos.

Dec. 12-14

The students that are on Chapter 3 Rates and Ratios are cruising through the skills.  I hope to have them complete the Posttest before break so we can start fresh after break.

The students that are on Chapter 2 are working on the review and will take the Chapter 2 Posttest before break.

Dec. 5-9

For the week our focus will be on Chapter 3, Rates and Ratios.   I hope to complete Chapter 3 before the students leave from break.

I am so pleased with how the students are growing as math students.  With the small groups, students are working based on what they need to practice or learn based on the Chapter pretest, and it is incredible to see the students grasp the math concept and their eyes light up!

Nov. 28 - Dec. 2

Welcome back!  I hope that you all had an amazing break!

Most of the students have finished Chapter 2, Fractions and Decimals.  If you child hasn't, they will finish this week.

For the students who are finished with Chapter 2, we will move on to Chapter 3, Ratios and Rates.  We will begin with a Pretest to check for understanding and the skills that need to be taught.  This Pretest will be the same Chapter 3 test that the students will take at the end of the Unit.

We have been using the Big Ideas Program and will continue to utilize this program.  If you child is needing extra practice, please feel free to have them log into the Big Ideas Program and there are some videos, skills practice and games that your child can participate in for better understanding.

Nov. 14-18

By the end of the week, I hope to have all groups finished with Chapter 2.  All of the students have worked so hard on learning fractions and decimals.

If the students finish the skills early this week, they will work on building an amusement park using fractions and decimals.

Nov. 7-10

The focus this week is to have all the students finish up Chapter 2. The math groups are a great way to address all the student's math learning needs. I am so pleased with how the students are working and understanding multiplying and dividing fractions.

All students have been successfully logged into Big Ideas Math and we have been becoming familiar with utilizing this math tool!

Oct. 31 - Nov. 4

Math rotations are going amazing!

The focus is still multiplying and dividing fractions and I hope all students to be working with decimals by the end of the week.   After the students are meeting with at 80% on a specific skill, they move to the next math skill.

I have two students left to get into Big Ideas Math computer program, so I hope to utilize this resource this week for students to have extra practice.

Oct. 24-28

I am so thrilled how Math went last week.  Students were placed in groups based on their knowledge of multiplying fractions.  I was able to work in small groups and focus on the skills that the students need to be successful with fractions.

We will continue to work on Multiplying Fractions and move into Division of Fractions.  The students appear to appreciate working in small groups as they are learning new information!

I have only 6 students left to get into Big Ideas Math, and I hope to start assigning work through that computer program.   Students can also get extra practice with math concepts at school or home if they choose to do so!

October 17-21

Welcome back to Math!!

Before break we started working on Fractions, and I want to take a step back to see what the students already know.  On Monday the students will be taking a pretest over Chapter 2 material (fractions and decimals), so that I can focus on the learning that each student needs.  Then for the rest of the week, I will be grouping students on the skills that need to be taught.  I also want to give extensions to students who understand each skill as to keep pushing the students forward.

Sept. 26 - 30

We will finish Chapter 1 Numerical Expressions and Factors.  The students will finish the review of skills and then spend a day review using a Blooket game.  Wednesday the students will take the Chapter 1 Assessment.

We will then for right into Chapter 1 Fractions and Decimals. The focus will be multiplying and dividing fractions, and adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals.

Sept. 19-23

The focus this will be Least Common Multiples.  The students will be learning what the a multiple means, and then learning three different strategies to find the LCM; Venn diagram, using lists and prime factorization.

Sept. 12-16

This week will be use our learning of Prime Factorization to move forward to Greatest Common Factors.  The students will take notes of the vocabulary words Greatest Common Factors and common factors. Students goal for the week is to understand that the greatest common factor is the largest of the factors that are shared by two or more numbers.  Two strategies with be taught to find the greatest common factor; by using a list of factors and using a factor tree.

Sept. 6-9

For Math this week, the students will receive feedback on their quiz over exponents and order of operations.  If any reteaching needs to occur, we will also spend some time on mastering these skills.

Our new focus this week will be on prime factorization. We will be learning about factors, factor trees and prime numbers.
