Starting on Monday, March 13 we begin state PARCC & CMAS assessments.  We will conclude testing in April, after our Spring Break.  Specific times and days for students are posted on the calendar on our website.  For more information about PARCC & CMAS assessments, see the Power Point below from the PARCC Coffee Talk last week.

As with all standardized assessments, practice does improve student scores.  However, test preparation will be only a small part of students’ instructional time over the next few weeks, as regular instruction must continue.  While it is not required, practice at home for the upcoming assessment is encouraged.  You can access the public access practice assessments online using Firefox or Internet Explorer web browsers.  At this time, you will only be able to access PARCC ELA/Literacy and Mathematics assessments, not the CMAS Science assessment.   The Colorado Department of Education has not indicated when the public CMAS Science practice tests will be available.

Grades 3-9* will take the PARCC ELA/Literacy and Mathematics Assessment (*9th grade will take the Algebra I assessment).

Grades 5, 8, and 11 will take the CMAS Science (Online practice tests are not available)

Go to http://parcc.pearson.com and click on Practice Tests.

  • Click on ELA or Math
  • Choose the grade of your child
  • Select Computer-Based Practice Test

 Practice tips:

  • Review the Rubric to see how students are scored.
  • Encourage your child to read the instructions and questions entirely before answering a question.
  • Encourage the use of scratch paper when doing the Math assessment.
  • Discuss the questions with your child.
  • Encourage your child to practice the writing portions by typing their answers.
  • DON’T over practice.  While we want our students to be ready, we don’t want them to be burnt out before the actual Assessment.

Also, during the assessment window, we have some reminders and guidelines we need all parents to follow.

*NO VOLUNTEERS FOR CLASSROOMS OR LUNCH VISITORS DURING THE TESTING WINDOW (Testing starts March 14th & goes through all of April). THE ONLY VOLUNTEERS ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING WILL BE OUR SCHEDULED LUNCH VOLUNTEERS. This is for all grades, as we are testing in many locations throughout the building and cannot risk any disruptions.

*Please make sure your students are here on time and for the entire day during their specific testing window. We ask that you do not pick your student up early or bring them in late on these days. If a student leaves during the middle of a test, then their tests will be invalidated.  We would like to prevent this as much as possible.

*6th grade lunch schedule will be modified on Monday, March 20th – Wednesday, March 22nd. The schedule is as follows:

  • Recess: 11:45-12:15
  • Lunch: 12:15-12:45

*9th Grade lunch schedule will be modified on Friday, March 17th.

  • Lunch: 11:45-12:30

Thank you for your support and understanding.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email the Assessment Coordinator, Daneke Callahan at daneke.callahan@westgateschool.org.
