Week of 1/29 to 2/2

We will be working on major personalities that played a part in women's suffrage.  Students will learn more about those who fought for suffrage and choose one to research further.

Week of 1/22 to 1/26

We will be working on major events that led to the creation of Colorado as a state.  We will use secondary sources to learn about these events, and students will have the opportunity to use their voice to rank these events' importance.

Week 12/11-12/15

Growing Toward Statehood! The rest of this quarter we will be learning about the steps the Territory of Colorado took to become a state.

12/4/17-12/8/17

This week in Social Studies, students will be finishing up the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. This was a short unit. Students are currently working on a way to present their knowledge. Some are working on a play, a story, a power point, or extensive note taking to help show what they have learned about the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. They need to include:
Places to Locate- Arvada, Auraria, and Cherry Creek
People to Know- John Beck, William Byers, Fifty-Niners, John Ralston, and William Green Russell
Event to Remember- The Russell brothers' discovery started the Pikes Peak Gold Rush

Thank You

A big shout out THANK YOU to all the parents that helped with the Rendezvous! It couldn't have happened without your donations and support. I am so thankful for all of your love and support through these big projects. I believe that our students learned so much and had a lot of fun!

This week we will be learning about the Pikes Peak Gold Rush and what that meant for growth of Colorado.

11/13/17

This week is a very special week in Social Studies. Our cumulative project for the unit of the Fur Trade is the Rendezvous. The students have been working very hard to recreate what it would be like to live during this time period. The Rendezvous will take place on Friday during both Social Studies and Science classes. If you have any questions please let me know.

11/06/17

In Colorado Social Studies we are working on a unit that concentrates on the Fur Trade. The Fur Trade was the first industry in Colorado and really important to the economy at that time. It was also Mountain Men and Fur trappers that were the first Europeans to settle in this area. Every year Mountain men, friendly Indians, and traders had a special gathering called a Rendezvous. Every year at Westgate, the fourth grade students study what they will need for a Rendezvous and put on a mock Rendezvous for the whole 3rd and 4th grade pod. Students will need to come up with a station and the supplies that they will need. The fourth grade students will create a signup genius and send it out to parents via email early this week. Please let me know if you have any questions.

10/30/17

This week in Social Studies we will continue our unit on the Fur Trade. We will be using the History Colorado Online Exhibit (http://exhibits.historycolorado.org/bentsfort/bents_home.html#mountainMen) to gather information about this time period. Every year, the week before Thanks Giving Break, the 4th grade students participate in a Rendezvous to wrap up our Fur Trade Unit. The students will need to do research to find out what they will need in order to put on the party.

10/23/17

This week we will finish up learning about Colorado Explorers and how the Mexican American War effected the land we now call Colorado.

Week of Oct. 16th

This week is our unit on Colorado Explorers. We will be learning about Zebulon Pike and other famous explorers that happen to have mountain rages named after them. Fun fact: Did you know that Zebulon Pike never made it to the top of Pike's Peak? His team had to turn back due to bad weather, a lack of supplies, and sickness.

October 16th & 17th

Hey all,
I wanted to let you all know that I will be out of the building on both Monday and Tuesday for the CAGT Conference. If your child will struggle because I won't be there, please talk to your child and prep them for a sub.
Thank you,
Melissa Woodward
