Ms. Calder, Math, 6th Grade

Posts

January 17-19

For No Worksheet Wednesday, we will start our Math Workshop using story problems to review Greatest Common Factors and Least Common Multiples. The students will have time to work out the problem, then collaborate with their peers and explain their thinking.

For the rest of the week, we will continue on the Chapter 4 and 5 lessons based on the skills that each student needs.

January 8 - 12

Happy New Year!

We are going to pick up where we left off before break where some students are finishing Chapter 3, rates and ratios and Chapter 4 Percents and decimals, and some students are starting Chapter 5 Algebraic Expressions through our small group instruction.

Wednesday will still be no Worksheet Wednesday, and after attending a Math Workshop conference before break I will implement that into instruction by digging deeper into communicating and solving math story problems.

Dec. 11 - 13

On Monday and Tuesday our goal is to stop our groups in a good spot before break.  We are working on Chapter 3, Rates and Ratios and Chapter 4, Precents and Decimals depending on which group your child is in.

On Wednesday, we will take a practice CMAS to continue to figure out what missing Math Skills we need to address in 6th grade.

Have your children do the math when you are going to the store and figuring out the total cost, or if there is a discount. have your child figure out what the sale price will be. :)

Dec. 4 - 8

Most of the students are finish with Chapter 3 and moving into Chapter 4, Percents and Decimals.  During the small group sessions, when I present the math skills, it is so awesome to see the students light shine when they are understanding the skill.

On no worksheet Wednesday, the students started creating their own math games to share with the class.  The focus of the games are on fractions and decimals.

Nov. 27 - Dec. 1

For Math this week we will finish Chapter 3, Rates and Ratios and begin Chapter 4 working on Percents.

We will continue with no worksheet Wednesday by playing games that support the skills of fractions and decimals.

Nov. 13-17

We are moving forward with Chapter 3, Rates and Ratios.  This is a short chapter, and I hope to have this Chapter finished by the end of the week.

The last two week we have been doing No Worksheet Wednesday.  The students have done a great job learning about fractions and decimals playing games.

Nov. 5 - 9

Some students need to finish their Chapter 2 post assessments, and some students have already begun Chapter 3, rate and ratios.

The students are doing amazing at writing word problems and teaching the class during the warmup.  Some great Math skills are being shared.

The last two Wednesday's we have been doing No Worksheet Wednesday.  There are multiple game options that the students can choose and practice math skills.  We have been focusing on fractions and decimals to keep those skills fresh in their minds.

October 30 - November 3

Some students are entering Chapter, Rate and Ratios.  After completing the pretest students will be taught and assigned the math skills that they need to learn.

Some students are at the tail end of Chapter 2.  After the Posttest for Chapter 2 is completed, I will meet with each student to compare the pretest to the posttest and discuss the skills that they may still need to be practiced.

The students have been writing word problems that are being used as the Warmup problems and it has been incredible to see the created problems and the students teaching their thinking!

October 23 - 27

The students will be testing over Chapter 2, fractions and decimals, and the pretesting for Chapter 3, Rates and Ratios to show their knowledge.  The Chapter 3 Pretest will determine the lessons that will be focused on for each student.

We are going to start implementing No Worksheet Wednesday where students will play math games to reinforce math skils.

October 16 - 20

Welcome Back!

We are finishing up Chapter 2, Fractions and Decimals, and then move directly into Chapter 3, Ratios and Rates.

All the students are individually learning based on the math concepts that they know and the practice for the skills in each chapter that they need to learn.

I challenged the students to write word problems to use as the Warmups for the beginning of class. The students will use the Math skills that we have learned this year and great a word problem that the rest of the class will work on and then the student who created the problem will share the answer and teach the rest of the class their math thinking!

Sept. 25 - 29

We will continue working on Chapter 2 material: fractions and decimals.
The students have been working so hard on learning the process of multiplying and dividing fractions. Our goal is to finish this Chapter before Fall break.

Sept. 18-22

Most students are finished with the Chapter 1 material, and they showed the progression of learning of Numerical Expressing and Factors.
Some students have started diving into Chapter 2, Fractions and Decimals as we are putting into practice the knowledge from Chapter 1.

Sept. 11-15

Monday or Tuesday will be the last day for Chapter 1 depending on what group you are in based on your math learning.

Chapter 2 will begin with taking a Pretest to determine the math skills that need to be learned.  Chapter 2 focus is Fractions and Decimals.

Sept. 5-8

The warmup activity will be practicing math skills from Chapter 1; factors, prime factorization, GCF, and LCM.

We will be finishing Chapter 1 this week and moving on into Chapter 2, Fractions and Decimals.

I hope to get the students logged into the Big Ideas website as there are many great tools for students to practice math skills.

August 28 - 31

The students are getting into the math groups, and I am pleased how well all the students are doing.  We are currently in Chapter 1 and cruising through with the lessons based on what each student needs to learn.
We have worked on exponents, order of operations, prime factorization and Greatest Common Factor.

I would like to complete Chapter 1 learning before the long weekend.
