November 27-December 1

In our literacy circles this week, we are focused similes, alphabetizing, verb tenses, and Frindle Chapters 12-15. Thursday, we will have a make-up day and Scholastic News (since we have a field trip on Friday).Please practice at home with A-Z vocabulary or any other way you would like.

We are continuing to write our persuasive essays! Students will write their introduction and conclusion paragraphs. They will put all their work together to produce a first draft of their essay.

Novemeber 13-17

In our literacy circles this week, we are focused on writing complete sentences and adding details to our work. Students will work on sentence corrections and writing their own complete sentences filled with details! Thursday, we will have a make-up day and Friday we will do Schloastic News Friday. Spelling words are the same from last week. Please practice at home with A-Z vocabulary or any other way you would like.

We are continuing to write our persuasive essays! Students will continue to work with their graphic organizers to create strong agruments. They will also learn how to write a thesis statement and conclusion this week and next.

Novemeber 6-9

This week we started out literacy circles. Students are broken down into 5 groups. Monday-Wednesday students will have two rotations of work to do. On Thursday, students will have a make-up day and we will do full class work. Friday, we will continue with our Scholastic News Friday. Please ask your student what group they are in so you know what spelling words to work on at home. Each group is working on a different spelling rule, so the words will vary greatly.

October 30-November 3

This week we are continuing to write our persuasive essays. Students will use graphic organizers to organize their evidence and opinions. Students will use their work to write a 5 paragraph essay by the end of the quarter. Students are still reading "Frindle" and doing comprehension work attached to it. 
 
We are fully transitioning into purposeful literacy centers by the beginning of next week. Students might come home with work if it is not finished in class.
 
The spelling words for this week are: caution, education, nation, solution, reaction, option, attention, mention. The challenge words are: Halloween and Day of the Dead

October 23-27

This week we are continuing to do research for our persausive writing unit on "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Students will finish researching each different type of element bending this week and write a proposal which one they believe they would be. This proposal will be used to write their persausive essay.
 
We have begun our new book for this quarter, "Frindle"! 
 
Spelling words for this week are short -a and short -e words: shelf, ever, when, invent, spend, event, letter, rent, penny, clever

October 16-20

This week we are introducing our writing unit for Quarter 2...persuasive writing! Students will be writing a persuasive essay about which bender they would be in Avatar the Last Airbender. We will be researching and reading about Avatar at school, but feel free to watch Avatar on Netflix at home.
 
We will begin our book study groups next week and will be wrapping up "Save Me A Seat".

September 25-29

We are sharing our personal narratives with our classmates and doing fun writing activities. We will also finish "Save Me a Seat".

September 18-22

Students are finishing up their Personal Narratives! They are learning how to edit their own papers, as well as their peers. Students are still reading and loving "Save Me a Seat".
 
Please continue to work on A-Z vocabulary at home. The spelling words for this week are: bake, bare, time, life, come, page, nose, give, lake, wise.
 
Challenge words: single, double, triple

September 11-15

This week we are practicing RACES reponses as well as continuing our Personal Narratives. Students will finish their rough drafts, edit, peer-review, and produce their final drafts this week! We will continue to read "Save Me a Seat" as well.
 
Please continue to review the vocabulary words from last week. Students will be tested on Friday.

September 5th-8th

We are learning how to identify the beginning, middle, and end of a story. They will use this knowledge to write their own narratives. They will continue to read "Save Me a Seat" and study their spelling words from last week.
