First Week Announcements

Dear Westgate High School Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have all had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends this holiday season. We are excited and eager to welcome your students back on Monday, January 14th for our second semester. Front Range Community College courses do not begin until Tuesday, January 22nd, but we have planned a variety of programs and activities for the first week of school, 1/14/19 – 1/18/19.

In response to feedback from students and parents, Westgate has invited professionals to share about topics such as drug education and sexual health and education. Please read the information below, and contact Amanda Novak if you wish to opt your student out of any of these opportunities.

On Monday, January 14th, 2019, Lynn Riemer, Founder and President of ACT (Adolescent & Community Training) on Drugs, is presenting to High School students throughout the day. Lynn is an “experienced chemist and prior member of the North Metro Drug Task Force in Colorado,” and she is an engaging and authentic national speaker and trainer. We are honored to invite Lynn to Westgate to share and converse with our students! Lynn is also hosting a Parent and Community training later in January – keep your eyes peeled for more information about that! You can read more about ACT on Drugs and Lynn at https://actondrugs.live-website.com/.

On Thursday, January 17th, 2019, the Responsible Sex Education Institute through Planned Parenthood is visiting Westgate to teach High School students about topics such as gender and sexuality, healthy relationships, consent, STIs, and more. Please see information provided by the RSEI below:

Dear Parent(s) Guardian(s),

We, at the Responsible Sex Education Institute, believe that everyone deserves the information to keep their bodies and relationships healthy, safe and happy.

On January 17th, your student will participate in a sexual health program taught at Westgate Community School by educators from the RSEI.

High School Sexuality Education curriculum topics will be taught within this program.  These topics will be taught by a trained member of the Responsible Sex Education Institute of Planned Parenthood of The Rocky Mountains. The lessons teach youth about consent, healthy relationships, contraception, gender and sexuality, communicating about sex, STIs, and sex & technology. We teach these topics by providing medically accurate, developmentally appropriate, and factual information.

You are welcome to preview the High School Sexuality Education curriculum materials. Please contact Julie LaBarr, The Responsible Sex Education Institute Program Manager at 303-813-7631 and we will arrange a preview time and answer any questions you may have about the program.

If you do not want your student participating in this program, please call or email your child’s advocate (Sturr, Brinkley, Ellis, or Cuevas) or Amanda Novak at 303-452-0967 / [email protected].

If our team does not hear from you before the training begins, we will assume you would like your student to participate in this education program.

Thank you for taking the time to review this information. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to any High School teacher or Amanda Novak.
