Topic 9.1  The Peoples of North America

Objectives: Describe how hunters and gatherers spread into the North American continent and established their unique ways of living. Explain how distinct cultures were created by early hunters and gatherers moved across the Bering Strait into North America.

Topic 9.2 Early Civilizations in Mesoamerica

Objectives: Describe how early Mesoamerican civilizations flourished with fully developed political, religious, and social structures. Explain how the Olmec, the first Mesoamerican civilization, appeared around 1200 B.C., and the city of Teotihuacan thrived until A.D. 800. Explain how the Maya and the Toltec were able to rule Mesoamerica for nearly nine centuries. Relate the conditions that helped the Aztecs rule Mesoamerica until the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s.

Objectives: Describe the process of how new farming practices supported population growth, and the revival of trade led to a money-based economy and the rise of cities. Describe life under the manorial system of the Middle Ages in which serfs worked the lands of lords. Explain how the revival of trade during the High Middle Ages gave rise to a money economy and the growth of cities, which became centers for manufacturing and trade.

Topic 6.2 Medieval Christianity

Objectives: Describe how, under strong leadership, the Catholic Church reached the height of its pollical power and became a dominant and forceful presence in medieval society. Explain how new monastic orders emerged as religious enthusiasm spread through Europe. Describe the reasons why ordinary people observed the Church’s sacraments, venerated saints, and took pilgrimages to holy shrines.

Topic 6.3 Culture of the High Middle Ages

Objectives: Explain how technological innovations made Gothic cathedrals possible, while an intellectual revival led to the formation of universities. Explain the importance of medieval university students applying scholasticism to the study of theology. Discuss why troubadour poetry and the heroic epic poem were popular forms of vernacular literature in the twelfth century.

Topic 6.4 The Late Middle Ages

Objectives: Explain how the Black Death had disastrous social and economic effects, spreading throughout Europe during the mid-fourteenth century. Describe how the Great Schism of the Catholic Church caused great pollical conflict and let Europe divided for four decades. Cite evidence as to why England and France waged the long, violent Hundred Years’ War. Analyze the reasons why France, England, and Spain emerged as new monarchies by the late 1400s.
