Math Workshop: Data Collection and Graphing 2/8/21

Dear Family,

This week we will continue focusing on data collection and graphing. We will learn how to collect data and then sort and organize it on a Venn Diagram. We will also learn how to create bar graphs, tally charts, pictures graphs, line graphs, and circle graphs. Finally, we will learn how to read and interpret the information presented on the graphs / charts.

Vocabulary

Venn Diagram – an organizer made from two interlocking circles, used to show similarities and differences between 2 or more objects.

Picture Grapha display of information using pictures or symbols to represent different quantities.

Line graph – a graph that uses points connected by lines to show how the value of something changes.

Bar Graph – a display of information using vertical or horizontal rectangular bars to show the value of different items.

Supporting Your Student at Home

oEmpty the coins out of your pocket – have your child create a tally chart and bar graph showing the amount of coins.

oHave your child call family members to collect data and create a chart or graph of their choice. Examples of great questions to ask to collect data are:  What is your favorite season? What is your favorite holiday? What color are your eyes? How many pets do you have? What is your favorite color?

Math Workshop: Measurable Attributes 1/25/21

Dear Family,

This week we will continue to focus on measurement. We will learn how to measure objects using nonstandard measuring units, compare the lengths of 2 or more objects,  and compare the weights of 2 or more objects.

Vocabulary

Unit -  a whole group of objects that are the same shape and size – used to replace whatever you are measuring with. (ex. Instead of saying it is 9 paperclips long, it is 9 units long)

Length – how long something is

Weight- how heavy something is.

Heavier -  weighing more than something else.

Lighter – weighing less than something else.

Supporting Your Student at Home

oGive your child different objects to sort from shortest to longest.

oGive your child different objects to sort from lightest to heaviest.

oUse nonstandard objects to measure the length of different items. (paper clips, pennies, toothpicks, etc)

Math Workshop: Subtraction within 20 12/14/20

Hello All,

This week we will continue our focus on adding and subtracting to 20. We will practice adding by: using doubles and doubles plus one, making a group of 10, and counting on. We will also learn how to subtract with and without regrouping by using a place value chart and base ten blocks.

Vocabulary:

Doubles: Students will be able to add two of the same numbers.

Example 4+4 = 8

Group: students will be able to see items in sets of 10 plus some more.

Difference: students will be able to find to solution to a subtraction problem (known as the difference)

Regrouping: students will be able to compose and decompose groups of 10 when adding or subtracting 2-digit numbers.

Supporting Your Student at Home:

oGive your child two numbers and have them practice counting on, starting with the larger number.

oGive your child a set of objects (between 11 and 20) and make a group of 10 and count on the extras.

oAsk your child to show you how to use a Tens and Ones place value chart to add and subtract.

Math Workshop: Place Value to 20 11/16/20

Hello,

We will wrap up our focus on counting and comparing numbers within 20. We will learn how to count fluently, use a place value chart to show numbers, use a tens frame to understand numbers, compare numbers, order numbers, and write numbers to 20. We will wrap up our unit with a post-assessment on Thursday.

You should have received a letter from Ms. Collins regarding daily math practice. As of Monday, November 16th students will be required to spend 10 minutes a day engaged in math practice on www.mobymax.com. Your student will receive a grade for their participation and progression each week. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this new requirement please reach out via email. I am here to support you and your student!

Vocabulary

Compare Numbers: Students will be able to determine which number is more (bigger) or less (smaller)

Order Numbers: students will be able to put a set of numbers in order from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest.

Count fluently: Students will be able to count to 20 forwards and backwards without hesitation.

  • Supporting your student at home
  • Make flashcards and number them 1 to 20.
  • Ask your child to put a set of 4 numbers (up to 20) in order from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest.
  • Have your child tell you how many tens  and ones there are in a number up to 20.
  • Show your child two sets of objects and ask which set has more
  • Have your child collect sets of objects up to 20.
