Live Lessons Expectations for Parents:

We have so little direct instructional time on Zoom with our students so please be mindful of this and understand that we cannot address parent concerns and questions during these times. We would like to hold those times sacred for student learning and interactions only. Instructions on Edlio and Seesaw should answer most of your questions but you are welcome to email me with additional questions or concerns or attend my office hours, which are on Monday’s from 3:30 – 4:30 PM and Wednesday’s from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. Thank you for understanding that we need to make the most of the short minutes we have with students.

Digital Social Gatherings are Happening!!

Westgate knows that many of our students enjoy socializing and simply having the opportunity to be together... even virtually! Beginning next Friday, September 4th, Katie Goforth and Julie Ruhl will be hosting grade level Social Zooms for all students in 1st grade. Social Zooms are intended to be an unstructured space for kids to connect. Ms. Katie and Mrs. Ruhl are hosting the Zoom, but the purpose of the Social Zoom is to allow students to connect organically. They will ensure the Zoom remains school appropriate, safe and comfortable for all students!

  • There will be a 30 minute Social Zoom in the morning, and a 30 minute Social Zoom in the afternoon so that we can be flexible with family schedules.
  • In 1st grade, the Social Zooms will be from 9:00 – 9:30 am and 12:45- 1:15 pm
  • Here is the AM 9:00 am Link:  https://zoom.us/j/98629368262?pwd=Ym5VNTh2bG5ZMXZuU2E3c2pORU10Zz09
  • Here is the PM 12:45 Link: https://zoom.us/j/96680911182?pwd=dzFuSHJpUHg0WUJCYTRFOG96WVNHUT09
  • Social Zooms are completely optional! You can join none, one, or both!
  • Ms. Katie and Mrs. Ruhl will be monitoring the Zoom to maintain school expectations. If there are concerns during the Zoom, they will provide warnings and redirect behavior, but if the behavior continues, the student may be removed from the Zoom.
  • If you have any questions, please email [email protected] - we hope to see your student Friday!

Prioritizing Assignments on SeeSaw

Because all families have differing needs, we would like to help with prioritizing the schoolwork for your students at home. In order to offer some flexibility in managing school requirements and activities in your home, all assignments in Seesaw will have a ‘can-do’, ‘must-do’, and or 'proficiency check' notation assigned to it.

The top tier is 'proficiency check' and these are the assignments that show cumulative learning and show us that your child is proficient in the skills and standards that we have been working on throughout the week or in previous weeks. These will be recorded as proof of your student's learning and proficiency of standards.

The next tier is notated as ‘must-do’ and these are the highly suggested work to do during distance learning to help your child learn and reinforce new skills and standards as well as deepen their understanding of content covered. These are required activities to keep them on track for acquiring grade level standards. They will also help your child gain proficiency towards the skills and standards on their 'proficiency check' assignments.

The final tier is notated as ‘can-do’ activities and incorporating these additional activities would mimic your child being physically in school and practicing all grade level standards and skills as well as replicating the full rigor of being in 1st grade. These activities offer additional practice needed to master skills and standards and are highly suggested but would be the best option for families to cut out if time or circumstances demand it.

Additionally, we know families are doing real-world learning experiences and are providing other opportunities for the kids to learn as well throughout the week, and we love and value that! Education will always look different for all students and that is okay. This is only a clarification tool for us to help parents, and caretakers to help plan and schedule your day. We are here to work with you, and we appreciate all that you are doing on your side to do what is best for your kiddo. We will continue to do our best in this situation as well; thank you for your grace and please continue to communicate with us as we are all in this together.
