Week 5: Physical Science – Energy

Please note that Studies Weekly may provide students with a project and/or activity that involves materials.  These activities are optional and can be done at home with parent support if you and your child are interested.  They are not required. 

Objective - Students will learn and understand what energy is and have a basic understanding of the different types of energy that exist.   

Monday - Vocabulary 

Students should review & write down the vocabulary words & definitions for the week.  Afterwards, students will create a Frayer Model for each vocabulary word.  The Frayer Model has been explained & students will have an example to view.  The PDF of these words has been posted into Teams.  Please go to Science, then click on the “Vocabulary” Channel on the left-hand side.  Next, click files at the top.  There is a PDF entitled “Science Vocab. Week 5”.  Students should write these definitions in their notebook, then complete the Frayer Model.  There is also a PDF entitled “Vocabulary Frayer Model” to which students may refer.   

Tuesday – Live lesson at 11:00am

We will introduce the concept of energy and brainstorm different types of energy that exist.  We will read and discuss the following articles: 

• All About Energy 
• Types of Energy 

Wednesday – Articles 

Students should read the following articles on Studies Weekly and answer the comprehension questions at the bottom of each article.  The articles are titled: 

• Albert Einstein (1879-1955) 
• How are fossil fuels formed? 
• Heat Energy Transfer 

Thursday – Live lesson at 11:00am 

We will review the articles from the previous day and go over answers to student questions.  We will watch additional videos regarding energy, types of energy, and energy transfer.   We will also complete the “Energy Einstein” page together.   

Friday – (graded assignment) Complete the Week 5 Social Studies Quiz on www.studiesweekly.com. Students are permitted to go back to the articles to reread in case they have forgotten something! 

Week 4:  Physical Science – Under the Microscope

Objective - Students learn the function of microscopes and the basic ways in which they work.  Students will understand that our knowledge of matter is based on our ability to use microscopes since particles are too small to see without tools.

• Microscopes

Week 2:  Physical Science – Properties of Matter 

Objective - Students learn that matter takes up space and has observable properties.  Students will learn that matter can change states and how this process occurs naturally.   

Monday - Vocabulary – Students will review the 4 weekly vocabulary words.  The PDF of these words has been posted into Teams.  Please go to Science, then click on the “Vocabulary” Channel on the left-hand side.  Next, click files at the top.  There is a PDF entitled “Sci. Vocab. Week 2.  Students should write these definitions in their notebook, then complete the Frayer Model.  We completed a Frayer Model last week, so students know what this looks like.  There is also a PDF entitled “Vocabulary Frayer Model” to which students may refer.   

Tuesday – Introduction and Articles – We will identify and discuss the different states of matter (solid, liquid, & gas) as well as physical properties of matter (texture, hardness, weight, etc...), & chemical properties of matter (rust, flammability, explosivity, etc...).

Students will need to answer all questions at the bottom of each article.  There are always 3 questions.  Their assignment afterwards is to read and answer questions for the following articles: 

1. A)Creative Properties – This involves writing a short poem.  Students will need a notebook to do this article.  
2. B)Microscopes

Wednesday – Articles – Students will go more in-depth about properties of matter & physical/chemical properties.  Their assignment afterwards is to finish the remaining Science articles for the week, which are titled:  

1. A)Who invented the popsicle?
2. B)Archimedes (287 B.C. – 212 B.C.)
3. C)Let's Investigate

Thursday – Articles & Review – We will review the articles & answers from the previous day to ensure understanding and allow students to ask questions. We will watch and discuss BrainPop videos together.  We will prepare for the Week 2 quiz by reviewing the regions of Colorado.  Their assignment is to complete the Week 2 Quiz on Studies Weekly.  Students are permitted to go back to the articles to reread in case they have forgotten something!    

Friday – NO SCHOOL – Teacher Workday.  Students are not expected to work.
