Weekly Update - Oct. 14-16

Please remember there are NO zoom classes this quarter. There are instructional videos and independent practice for every school day located on Teams. 
 

Wednesday 

-Lesson: What is a Research Based Essay? Requirements and notes.  

-Share on Flipgrid -What makes a research-based essay different from a narrative? 

Thursday 

-Lesson: Sample Research Based Essay and “What do you notice?”  

-Reread the sample essay. Then complete the “What do you notice?” at the bottom of the same OneNote page. 

Friday 

-Lesson: Choosing a Topic 

-Submit “Choosing a Topic” page in assignments on Teams *this will be the topic you research and write about for your 5 paragraph essay.

-Create a short story or poem, submit on Teams 

-Read a book of your choice for 20 minutes 

Tuesday 

-Remove words from your piece of writing from yesterday, replace with blanks and identify part of speech (Create a Mad Libs) 

-Read a book of your choice for 20 minutes 

Wednesday 

-Meet me on Zoom with your Mad Libs 

-Read a book of your choice for 20 minutes – post on Teams: Title & Author, whether or not you would recommend the book to others, and why/why not

Book Study – I Survived the Eruption of Mount St. Helens, 1980 by Lauren Tarshis

Why? This book connects with our science unit for this quarter and is a quicker read that can be used as a model for narrative writing.

Independent assignment for this week – Read chapters 1-4 and complete the book study assignments for this week in OneNote.  Weekly book study assignments include vocabulary, comprehension, and connections to other content like art, science, and social studies.

Writing:

Zoom: Wednesday, Aug. 26.   9:30-10:00

Unit: Narrative Writing

Topic: Writing Process, Character

We will review the writing process, placing particular emphasis on making revisions.  Students will practice writing descriptive sentences to show readers the characters’ emotions and traits.

Independent assignments for this week – Finish Initial Writing Prompt, Character Writing Station, Character Development for Narrative Writing, and Week 1 Daily Practice.

This week, I am asking students to complete a preliminary writing sample.  The prompt can be found and completed in OneNote.  This piece of writing is something we will be working with all quarter long as we practice various writing skills.
