Week of September 14th

Week 4Rivers & Lakes of Colorado

Please note that Studies Weekly may provide students with a project and/or activity that involves materials.  These activities are optional and can be done at home with parent support if you and your child are interested.  They are not required. 

Objective Students are familiarized with the location, relative size and purpose of Colorado’s waterways. 

Monday - Vocabulary 

Students should review & write down the vocabulary words & definitions for the week.  Afterwards, students will create a Frayer Model for each vocabulary word.  The Frayer Model has been explained & students will have an example to view.  The PDF of these words has been posted into Teams.  Please go to Social Studies, then click on the “Vocabulary” Channel on the left-hand side.  Next, click files at the top.  There is a PDF entitled “SS Vocab. Week 4”.  Students should write these definitions in their notebook, then complete the Frayer Model.  There is also a PDF entitled “Vocabulary Frayer Model” to which students may refer.   

Tuesday – Articles 

Students should read the following articles on Studies Weekly and answer the comprehension questions at the bottom of each article.  The articles are titled: 

  • Let’s Learn About Colorado’s Lakes and Rivers 
  • When is a Ketchup Bottle Like a Bug-Eating Plant? 
  • Earth’s Water & Colorado’s Rivers 

Wednesday – In-person Learning Day – No assignment 

Thursday – Articles 

Students should read the following articles on Studies Weekly and answer the comprehension questions at the bottom of each article.  The articles are titled: 

  • Kiowa County 
  • Who were John Evans and Colonel John Chivington? 
  • Pelican 

Friday – (graded assignment) Complete the Week 4 Social Studies Quiz on www.studiesweekly.comStudents are permitted to go back to the articles to reread in case they have forgotten something!   

Week of September 8th

Week 3Colorado Mountains / Continental Divide

Objective Students name the main ranges/peaks that make up the Rocky Mountains and understand the Continental Divide. 

Monday - Labor Day – No School – Students are not required to complete any assignments. 

Tuesday - Vocabulary – Direct instruction via Zoom, 9:30 -10:00 a.m. 

Students will discuss & review the 4 weekly vocabulary words. Students will create a Frayer Model for each vocabulary word.  The Frayer Model will be explained during the lesson & students will have an example to go view.    The PDF of these words has been posted into Teams.  Please go to Social Studies, then click on the “Vocabulary” Channel on the left-hand side.  Next, click files at the top.  There is a PDF entitled “SS Vocab. Wednesday – Articles – Students should read the following articles on Studies Weekly and answer the comprehension questions at the bottom of each article.  The articles are titled: 

  • Put on Your Best Hiking Behavior 
  • The Rocky Mountains 
  • Mount Evans Wilderness 

Thursday – Articles & Review - Direct instruction via Zoom, 9:30 -10:00 a.m. Zoom  

We will review the articles & answers from the previous day to ensure understanding and allow students to ask questions.  We will prepare for the Week 3 quiz by reviewing the key ideas from the weekly articles.  Their assignment is to complete any articles that have not been completed in class.  I will be giving students the names of these articles and posting the information on Teams on Thursday.  Students should also complete the electronic crossword puzzle.  They will be shown exactly how to access this during class.

Week of August 31st

Week 2Regions of Colorado

Objective Students identify the characteristics of Colorado’s four main physiographic regions. 

Monday - Vocabulary – Students will review the 4 weekly vocabulary words.  The PDF of these words has been posted into Teams.  Please go to Social Studies, then click on the “Vocabulary” Channel on the left-hand side.  Next, click files at the top.  There is a PDF entitled “SS Vocab. Week 2.  Students should write these definitions in their notebook, then complete the Frayer Model.  We completed a Frayer Model last week, so students know what this looks like.  There is also a PDF entitled “Vocabulary Frayer Model” to which students may refer.   

Tuesday – Introduction and Articles – We will discuss what regions are and how they shape a state or country.  We will identify and discuss the regions within Colorado and what makes them different.  We will read & discuss the following articles together: 

  1. What’s in a Name?
  2. Singing Sand Dunes?
  3. Colorado Regions

Students will need to answer all questions at the bottom of each article.  There are always 3 questions.  Their assignment afterwards is to read and answer questions for the following articles: 

  1. William Penn and the Pennsylvania Quakers
  2. Sand Dunes

Wednesday – Articles – Students will complete the remaining articles for Week 2.  They are titled: 

  1. Where does oil come from?
  2. Bison
  3. Unscramble Your Neighbors
  4. Colorado Kids

Thursday – Articles & Review – We will review the articles & answers from the previous day to ensure understanding and allow students to ask questions.  We will prepare for the Week 2 quiz by reviewing the regions of Colorado.  There assignment is to complete the Week 2 Quiz on Studies Weekly.  Students are permitted to go back to the articles to reread in case they have forgotten something!   

Friday – NO SCHOOL – Teacher Workday.  Students are not expected to work.   

Week of August 24th

Week 1: Welcome to School

Objective Students will be introduced to Studies Weekly with an overview of Colorado’s physical features and the prehistoric events that formed these features. 

Monday - No assignment This is because our first class on Tuesday. 

Tuesday - Direct instruction via Zoom, 9:30 -10:00 a.m. Zoom

Vocabulary We will review the vocabulary words for the week.  Students will create a Frayer Model for each vocabulary word.  The Frayer Model will be explained during the lesson & students will have an example to go view.   

Wednesday  Articles Students will read articles on Studies Weekly from Week 1 & answer comprehension questions.  Students will be shown how to access these articles on their computer. The articles they should read are: 

  1. A) Let’s Learn About Colorado This Year!
  2. B) Philanthropy and Values
  3. C) Physical Colorado

Thursday –  Direct instruction via Zoom, 9:30 -10:00 a.m. Zoom

Articles & Review – We will read & discuss the remaining articles and review the material for Friday’s quiz.  Students will be instructed on how to access the quiz for the following day.
