Geometry

Course Description

While “geometry” is often described as the mathematics behind shapes, that scarcely begins to describe this immense, fascinating subject. Geometry is, in fact, how surfaces and points interact. It is the fractals of a forming snowflake, the symmetry of a leaf against the asymmetry of a sunflower, and the movements of the moon and stars across the sky. Everything from the planet orbits down to atomic forces is somehow connected to geometry. In this class, we won’t study the world’s shapes; we will examine what gives shape to the world.

In this class, we will learn how to: solve problems involving angles, congruency, and perpendicular lines; learn to rotate, reflect, translate, and dilate shapes both on paper and algebraically (and occasionally in the real world); use slopes to discover the types of circle centers and how to find them; break down seemingly complex problems using trigonometry; graph circles and other unusual shapes; and investigate architecture and science using all of the above.
