Rescheduled Field Trip Next Week!

Great News! We were able to reschedule our field trip to the Boulder Recycling Center! On Tuesday, March 3rd we will be going with our Service Learning Group to the Boulder Recycling Center. Ms. Valenza and our service learning buddies will be joining us, so we will not be needing chaperones this time around. Please click the link below and fill out the digital permission slip for your kindergarten student. If you have any questions please feel free to email your student's advocacy teacher! 
 

Literacy 2/24/20

This week in literacy we are going to continue Unit 15,
 
Children will learn to name and write uppercase R and lowercase r. They will learn the sound r stands for in words like rug, ring, and radio, and discover what synonyms are.

We will read about the Superkids cleaning and painting their new clubhouse.  Our sight words this week are "be" and "but."  
 
Students will continue to work on their procedural writing,  students will teach us "how to" do something  ie: ride a bike or make a necklace... 
 
Please continue to read to your child for 20 minutes a night, and have them read to you.  Students love the website/app "teach your monster to read."  The Superkids Unit is updated, and students are encouraged to login and explore.

Hello Wonderful Parents.
 
I hope your child enjoyed the long weekend!  This week in literacy we are finishing up the Unit 1 i4n the Superkids Club.  We will start Unit 15 on Friday. 
 
Children will learn to name and write uppercase R and lowercase r. They will learn the sound r stands for in words like rug, ring, and radio, and discover what synonyms are.

We will read about the Superkids cleaning and painting their new clubhouse. When the class listens to the read-aloud Colorific!, children will learn how artists make and use color to convey ideas and feelings.
 
We will do our pre-assessment for writing, "How to" writing pieces. I am excited for this writing unit. 
 
Please continue to read with your child at home, superkids site is updated and ready to go, teach monster is a fun app that the students also enjoy.  New reading passages are going home in Friday folders.

Literacy 2/10/2020

We’ve reached a milestone! Our class is moving into the second part of the Superkids program, Superkids' Club. In this part, the Superkids will turn an old bus into a clubhouse and think up lots of fun activities to do together, such as putting on a play, having a picnic, and participating in a scavenger hunt. By the end this semester, our class will have learned one sound for each letter of the alphabet.

In Unit 14, children will learn to name and write uppercase B and lowercase b. They will learn the sound b stands for in words like bread, bell, and birthday.

We will read about how the Superkids find a bus to use as a clubhouse. When the class listens to the read-aloud A Great Place, children will learn about important jobs people do in their community.

We’ll start our "How to" writing pieces and continue making kindness cards to pass out on Friday.
 
Please continue to read to your child at home, and have them read to you!  We know over 50 sight words that they can pick out of books. 

Literacy 2/3/20-2/7/20

Hello Parents!
 
This week in literacy we are learning the sight words "play" and "said."  New sight word sentence readers are going home Monday!
 
 
In Superkids, children will learn to name and write uppercase U and lowercase u. They will learn the short sound of u, as in us, up, and umbrella. By now we’ve met all of the Superkids and found out what each of them likes to do. During this unit we will find out that what the Superkids like to do the most is play together! When the class listens to the read-aloud All of Us, children will learn about the ways people all over the world are alike and different.

We will review the 13 letters and sounds we’ve learned so far, and then children will draw and write to tell about their favorite Superkids.
 
At home: continue to read with your child at least 20 minutes every day.  Please have your child read the sight word sentences to you daily.  Students love to logon to the Superkids portal and play the games. 

Literacy 1/27/20-1/31/20

This week in Literacy we are finishing our PALS testing.  The students have been persevering and working hard independently while we test. I am very proud!
 
We are finishing our Hot Rod book, and starting in the Superkids Club.  The sight word we are learning this week is, saw. Also, we are writing about our favorite part of the symphony. 
 
We have a busy week!  The symphony field trip is on Tuesday, and JA in a day is on Friday. Friday, students will be learning about Economics during Literacy. 
 
Please keep reading every night with your child!  Students have been writing sentences using finger spaces and punctuation, many students want to write at home! New Superkids games will be available online this week, check it out!

Literacy 1/20/20-1/23/20

Hello Parents!
 
I am very impressed with your children this week!  I am blown away with how much they are writing and reading!  Last week was thrown off by absences and sickness going through our school.  The students wrote about what they did over break, added pages to our "If you give our class a..." book, and wrote about where they would travel and how they will get there. 
 
Our whole class has really improved on capital letters, finger spacing and punctuation.  
 
This week we are learning the sight words she, here, and are.  Students will be writing sentences using our new sight words and will read them in our new books.
 
In Superkids, students will learn to name and write uppercase H and lowercase h. They will learn the sound h stands for in words like horse, hand, and helicopter. We will meet Hot Rod, who loves fast cars, and we will learn about car parts and racing. When the class listens to the read-aloud Wheels, children will learn about the invention of the wheel and its uses then and now.

We will make a class list of things that go fast, and children will write and illustrate informational books about things we listed.
 
A new sight word sentences will go home Monday, please read them with your child!

Literacy 1/13/20-1/17/20

Hello Parents, 
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break. I am excited to hear the stories about all the fun that was had. 
This week we are reviewing classroom routines and procedures following the long break. Students will practice read to self, buddy reading, word work, and free writing. 
We will continue working with the vowel e and Superkid Ettabetta.  We will  learn the sight words he and she. 
 
Please keep reading with your child at home. 

Literacy 12/16/19-12/18/19

In literacy this week we will continue writing our informational writing books.  The students have been forming phonetic sentences, using punctuation and working on their handwriting.  
 
We will be reading snowman and winter themed books, and will write about how to catch a snowman. 
 
We also will add the sight words said and are to our sight word bank.  

Literacy 12/9/19-12/13/19

Hello Parents!
 
This week in Literacy we are going to continue on our journey with our Superkid Frits. Students are going to sound out their CVC words with the added consonant. 
 
In writing students are continue their non fiction pieces.  We are really working on detailed pictures and detailed labeling. Students will have an extra focus on finger spaces, punctuation and capital letters.
 
The new sight words our students are working on are: "little," "have," and "here."  Please continue reading the sight word sentences at home with your child.  If you need another packet please let me know.
 
At home:
Sight word sentences, reading with your child for 20 minutes a night, teach-monster game  and  Superkids online. If you need logins for anything please let me know!

Holiday Party Sign Up 12/18/2019!

Literacy 12/2/2019-12/6/2019

Hello Parents!
 
I hope your child had a relaxing break.  This week in literacy we are getting back into routines!
 
In Superkids we are meeting the new superkid Frits.  We will manipulate the /f/ sound in the beginning, end, and middle of words.  
 
We are learning the new sight words "we" and "come.
 
Our class is also continuing our non-fiction reading and writing!
 
What you can do at home:
I am sending home 10 new sight word sentences, the instructions are on the packets.  Your child can read one page a night, this helps with sight words and reading fluency.
 
I also set up Teach Monster.  Our classes Star Code is 3954024 and the password is 123456.
 
Superkids is also updated and ready to go!
 
 
 

Literacy 11/18/19-11/24/19

Hello Parents!
This week in literacy we are continuing our journey with Tic Tac and Toc.  Students will figure out missing letters in words, listen to audio recordings and write down words they hear. 
 
We are learning the new sight words "like," "at" and "my. Students will be able to write and use these new sight words while reading. 
 
We are going to continue centers.  Students will be listening and following along with books, making words on the computer, and meeting with me!
 
We will keep working on our non-fiction writing. Adding details and work on finger spaces with our sentences. 
 
How to support your student at home:
 
I am going to be sending sight word sentences home.  The words on the sentences are words that we have already learned.  If you read these sentences with your child, it will help their fluency.  Please have them point to every word as they read.  
 
Superkids game is up and running.  We are now on Unit 9! Let me know if you need help logging in!

Literacy 11/12/2019-11/15/2019

Hello wonderful parents!
 
This week in Literacy your child is going to finish their Superkid Icky, they are also going to meet 3 new Superkids (Tic, Tac and Toc).  Your child will now use the vowels a, i and o consistently in their spelling. 
 
We are going to be continue on our non fiction writing, your child will teach us something new that they are an expert at!  We will be working on labeling, and using finger spaces in their sentences. 
 
Students are learning the new sight words "you" and "blue."
 
I am very excited to finally start small group centers with students reading to themselves, using computer games to make words, listen and read along with books, and meet with me!
 
This is going to be a fun and busy week in our class!

Hello Wonderful Parents!
 
This week in literacy we are meeting our new Superkid Icky.  Students will be able to use the /i/ sound in the beginning and middle of words, continue blending sounds together, and listen for word parts. 
 
We are in our non fiction reading and writing unit.  We will be learning about habitats in science and literacy!  Students will be able to explain the difference between non fiction and fiction books. 
 
We are working on writing facts that we learn from our non fiction books!
 
Word work this week includes learning the new sight words; not, up and red.  I am amazed at how fast the students are picking everything up!
