Week of Sept. 3

Unit: Number System
Big Idea: Decimal Place Value
 
  • Decimal number models
  • Numbers' value changes as it moves from place to place
  • Movement between place value (multiplying or dividing by ten)
Practice Opportunity
  • Many students are still struggling with reading and writing decimal numbers using standard, word, and expanded forms - practice task cards will be sent home Tuesday with students who are still developing proficiency on this skill (based on scores from last week's quiz)

Week of August 26

Unit 1: Decimal Place Value
  • Goal: read and write numbers to the thousandth place in standard, word, and expanded forms
  • Foundational skills:
    • understanding that once a place is "full," it carries over into the next greatest place
    • zeros as placeholders
    • number names
    • read and write numbers to the millions place in standard, word, and expanded forms
  • Activities:
    • Decimal Detectives Workshops
    • Oral/written practice as whole class and in small groups
    • Independent written practice (task cards)
    • End of week quiz
  • Challenge your student by quizzing him or her on numbers into larger place values or into more decimal places.  Ask them to teach you our Place Value Card Game!

Week of August 19

Fact Fluency
Expectation: students should be able to fluently multiply and divide single digit numbers 
What are we doing about it?
1. Practice!
Flashcards should have come home with your child this week.  You might ask how many sets they have already passed.  They dove right in!
2. Weekly Quiz
Each Friday, we will have a short, timed fact quiz that is individualized to each students' progress level.  They are tracking progress in their ISNB (Interactive Student Notebooks) here at school.
 
Class Introduction
Our first week was spent getting to know each other, practicing our class routine, and developing a growth mindset in math where we celebrate and fix mistakes as evidence of learning.
