Advocacy Work - Week 2 (from Mrs. Valenza)

 3rd & 4th grade Advocacy Activities

Monday- I have a strict belief that the more we know about a place the more we want to care for it. We can’t travel many places right now, but we can still appreciate what Earth has to offer. Let's travel using Google Earth. (https://www.google.com/earth/) Use the Search function to look up these different places: 1. Your house 2. Westgate 3. Favorite nature area to visit 4. Favorite City to visit 5. Somewhere you want to visit      Use the Street View function (the little guy above the black and white Earth on the bottom right hand corner of the screen) to look around each of these places.

Tuesday - Head to Mrs. Valenza’s Staff Profile page to hear her reading from The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry

Wednesday – Take a scavenger hunt walk! Attached is a scavenger hunt document if you’d like to print that out. You could also just write down some of the items on a separate piece of paper and check them off as you find them. Let Mrs. Valenza know what things you found!

Thursday – It's time to create! Ask your parents what recyclables you can use to create a recycling masterpiece. A robot? A castle? A new friend? Use your imagination (and a little tape)!

Friday - Originally, we were going to have an Earth Day fair at Westgate but that can’t happen anymore. We’re going to celebrate in a little different way. Head to Mrs. Valenza’s Staff Profile Page to hear what she wants you to do!

Week of March 13, 2020

You made it through the first week of distance learning! Great job!

Beginning this week, students should be able to find specific assignments to work on in Moby Max under the Assignments tab after logging in.  There should be at least one lesson per subject for the week, possibly more.  Students should begin working on these at their pace, continuing to aim for the work times below.  If assignments for each subject don't show up in the assignments section, or you have any problems finding them, please let me know right away so I can help getting students rolling in the right direction! Please remember, I can help, answer questions, share my screen and have your student share their screen during my office hours (Monday and Thursday 10am-11am).

Q and A

Questions I have received from parents and students with answers:

1. What Zoom meetings does my child need to be present for?
I would highly suggest that your child is present for their Advocacy Zoom meeting. This is held with their Advocacy teacher. However, we also are aware that some students won't be able to make the meeting.

2. What are "office hours" and does my child need to be present during this time?
"Office hours" is the time in which the teacher is available by Zoom to answer any questions from either parents or students. Students do not need to be present during this time but are welcome to attend to check in or ask their questions. Parents, feel free to attend to ask questions of the teacher. Being that the purpose of this time is to answer questions, attendees without questions will be muted in order to keep the time available and appropriate to the purpose.

3. Who is in charge of my students learning?
The teachers in the 3/4 Pod are planning together so that students will still get the standards that would have been taught in the school room this quarter. However, in order to simplify the distance learning, which is new to all of us, students have been grouped in their Advocacy classes and will receive most/all of their assignments and information from their Advocacy teacher. The parents primary contact for all classes should be their child's Advocacy teacher.

Dear parents,

As Spring Break comes to a close, teachers are working hard to plan for online learning. As such, you will be receiving the Moby Max login for your child today. More information regarding the online learning will be posted tomorrow. On a side note, it has been determined that the  Emergency Paper Work Packets that were sent home at the end of the quarter will be optional. I look forward to working with the students again!

February Advocacy Update

KINDNESS CARD DELIVERY AND PERMISSION SLIPS

Kindness card delivery will take place on Valentine’s Day.  Please keep an eye out for the electronic permission slip via e-mail.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Please consider making the walk with us to make deliveries of kindness cards.  Please indicate on the permission slips if you are interested in joining us.

VALENTINE’S DAY CARDS AT SCHOOL ARE NOT ALLOWED AT WESTGATE.  Student cannot bring, make, or deliver ANY Valentines at school, even to their closest friends. We will be making kindness cards during advocacy for the locations each advocacy is visiting on Valentine’s Day.

ADVOCACY FOCUS FOR FEBRUARY

The focus in our advocacy lessons for February is HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS.  Topics can include such topics as good manners, learning to listen to others, conflict resolution, what real friendship looks and sounds like, and having respect for the differences of others.

CMAS PRACTICE

During the week of February 19th, the entire pod will be doing a CMAS practice test.  It is important that students understand how the test works and what sort of things are going to be asked of them.  Please speak with your child about the importance of doing their best, even if it is just practice.

UPCOMING DATES

February 14th: Kindness Card Distribution

February 17th: No School - President’s Day

February 18th: No School - Teacher Work Day

"Toy Free" Zone

Westgate is moving towards a “toy free” zone.  We want students to focus on learning and building relationships while they are here, and toys become a disruption to this learning process.  Outdoor equipment (balls, scooters, jump ropes and sidewalk chalk) is still acceptable.  More information is coming soon from admin.  Please let us know if you have any questions.  Thank you so much for your support with this!
