Week of November 4th

Due to the snow from last week, we will continue to work on our stories Charles & Gaston.  Only students who were in this literacy class last year are reading Gaston.  There will be a quiz on these stories on Thursday.  We will also be working on a writing assessment.  Students will need to read two passages and respond to a prompt.  Please reinforce the importance of effort & doing one's best during assessments.

Week of October 28th

This week, we will continue to read & analyze the story Charles.  Students who already read this story last year will continue to read & analyze the story Gaston.  We will focus on identifying vocabulary words and defining them, as well as talking about potential answers to unanswered questions.  There will be a quiz on these stories on Friday.  Students will also finalize their Slice of Life and publish it.

Week of October 21st

This week, we will continue to read & analyze the story Charles.  Students who already read this story last year will continue to read & analyze the story Gaston.  In addition, we will revise our writing for word choice / vocabulary.  We will also begin editing.

Week of October 14th

This week, we will begin revising our Slice of Life rough drafts.  We will focus on word choice & sentence structure.  This includes fragments, run-on sentences, & combining sentences to make them compound / complex.  We will also begin read the Jr. Great Book story Charles. Students who already read this story last year will read the story Gaston.

Week of September 23rd

This week, we will continue to draft our Slice of Life personal narratives.  As of now, students should have 3 paragraphs written.  The rough draft should be finished by Wednesday (5 paragraphs total).  Students who were in this literacy class last year have been revising and rewriting sections of their Slice of Life from last year.  Once their new version is complete, they will write a new Slice of Life on a new topic.

Week of 9/16

This week, students will learn about sensory details to add into their Slice of Life.  This includes adding details that pertain to the senses (sight, smell, hear, taste, feel).  We will be drafting one paragraph each day.  Students should expect to have a completed rough draft by Friday.  We will also have a quiz on Thursday about making connections and inferences.

Week of September 9th

This week, we will work on the reading strategy 'inferring'.  We will also begin brainstorming and drafting a personal narrative writing piece called "Slice of Life'.  This is a writing piece where students narrate an important/memorable event in their life that took approximately 5 minutes of time.  This is done through a lot of description & explaining thoughts and feelings through the student's writing.

Week of September 3rd

This week, we will continue close reading strategies & annotations such as inferring and making connections.  We will also brainstorm ideas for our personal narrative, A Slice of Life.

Week of August 26th

This week, we will continue practicing procedures & building expectations for literacy.  We will also work on reading annotation strategies, starting with 'Depth of Knowledge: Questioning".  This involves asking and answering questions while reading, especially ones that do not have a true answer (can only be speculated).  We will also work on our RACES response strategy.
