Advocacy 10

Course Description

We meet each morning from 8:00-8:15 to build community. Often, we will stand in a circle to practice listening and sharing in a group environment. As your student's advocate, I will be the point of contact if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything you require help with.

Weekly Update 12/10/2018

The last day of regular classes is this Friday. Grades will be entered in then. We have finals next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ll post the finals schedule this week. As a reminder, you’re only expected to be here during your scheduled finals. We will have a space available to students who don’t have transportation back and forth. Next Thursday morning is our annual holiday celebration.

Battle of the Bards, our Shakespeare festival and culmination of our theater units in English 11 and English 9, has been moved to the afternoon of Monday the 17th to accommodateall our students. Parents, families and guests are welcome to join us for a fun afternoon of student performances in our very own tiny globe theater.

From our assistant principal, Amanda Novak:

I am excited to announce that we are instituting Coffee Talks for our High School parents, guardians, students, and community. Throughout this school year, I have received parent feedback that our community may benefit from occasional gatherings intended to inform and encourage discussion, perspective, and input.  As we continue to build our High School culture, it is important that you are part of this process.

Our first Coffee Talk will be held during Winter Conferences - details below - and will cover basic changes and concerns in the High School this year. There have been questions about new procedures, systems, agreements, and more. We are opening the table for authentic discussion, so join us! After our first meeting, we will host Coffee Talks during Quarters 3 and 4 around topics such as Vaping, Substance Abuse, Mood and Emotions, and more (if you have any great ideas, please send them my way!). We will host some talks in the morning, some right after school, and some in the evenings. We know you are busy people and we want to accommodate you the best we can. Please consider joining us, and as usual, do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

What: Coffee Talk - High School Basics (Systems, Procedures, General Concerns, all the things)

When: Thursday, December 20th at 6:00pm

Where: In the High School Community Space

Great job everyone with our service learning panels on Friday. It’s always a pleasure to have guests come in and see all of the good work that we’ve been doing in the high school.

Weekly Update 11-26-2018

Welcome to the home stretch of the semester. This week on Friday we have the service learning panels. Room assignments and schedules are posted outside of the classrooms. Students should come prepared to defend their projects from the semester. Most will require a PowerPoint presentation or similar visuals. Be sure to frame the presentation around how the service project benefited the community.

Weekly Update 10/22/2018

Thank you to all of team diplotard. Whether you inspired little kinders at Miller Farms last week or stayed and took care of chores… you are all so appreciated. This week, we will focus on developing our community such that we are able to successfully complete a “morning circle” without interruption. As it stands, we have a little bit of difficulty due to the very close nature of many friend groups in the class. We will also reaffirm our commitment to facilitating the opportunity for each and every person to great all of their peers. (We call this, “the snake”.)

Weekly Update 10/15/2018

Welcome back from break! As we begin this new quarter, all students will review procedures and expectations in preparation for the best quarter yet!

Don't forget that we will be doing a buddy advocacy field trip this Friday. Students should get their permission slip signed and to me asap.

Hello, Parents and Guardians,

In conjunction with Westgate's Whole Child Education Program and in an effort to provide every single student with unique, differentiated, and appropriate educational opportunities, we are assessing all students in academics as well as SEL and behavior. In order to get a complete picture of your students strengths and challenges, please fill out the following survey by Friday, September 20th. We know that some of the wording feels targeted for younger populations, but we are using this survey created by Robert Goodman as a universal screener school wide.

Thank you!
